Event Break Down:
30th June ~ 3th July 2008

30th July Monday ~ 1st July Tuesday

The Team had 3 days to prepare for the race.
On the to do list was a few minor modifications such as a new surgetank, a new full cusco roll cage and also minor adjustments to the car to meet all the safety requirements for this event.

Adjustments included included bonnet pins, kill switch stickers, a new fire extinguisher and a tow hook to the front and rear of the car.

2nd July Wednesday ~ 3rd July Thursday

The car was also checked for basic precaution and quickly thrown onto the in-house dyno to check if everything was running right because of the new surge tank that had been installed.

All the preparation work was finally finished on Friday;
all equipment was packed into the car, ready for the trip to Oran Park Raceway.

4th July 2008, Friday

9:00pm : After 15 hours of driving and countless redbulls. Scott finally reached Oran Park Raceway!

All of us were glad that the car made it through safe and sound without any major dramas along the way.

5th JULY, Saturday
Race Day 8:00am

The weather was perfect for a Race day. We put up the JIC and Motul banners and changed to our Hi-Power Racing/Motul uniforms.

After walking around, we realised we were obviously the underdogs,
next to big horse powered cars,
the list of driver names and garages were just as intimidating
made us feel like "Little David" facing the many "Giant Goliaths" in motorsport racing.

Our CRX was the smallest and had the least power at the wheels out of the 65 invited cars.
We had little experience in racing at this kind of level and it was tough to remain composed,
as we were now racing on a national level instead.
But we remembered we didn’t travel 1,000km from Brisbane to Oran Park just to feel intimidated and give up!

We were ready!!

Race Day, 9:00am
Scrutineering

Feeling pretty confident we straddled our little CRX into the scrutineering bay.
As luck would have it, we had the Scrutineer from hell go through our car.
He picked on every little crook and cranny in our car.
It sure felt like he was out to make our day go wrong!

http://hipowerracing.com/hpr/images/stories/superlap/superlapcol06.jpg

In the end he still failed us because our surge tank was in the cabin of the car,
we explained to him that the SARD surge tank was air tight.
But his answer was "Go get it covered or you won't see the track!!"

Race Day, 10.30pm
Session 1: DRAMAs

We knew we had to fix the problem or we might as well pack up and go home,
even though it meant missing the first session as it was going to start in 30 minutes.

http://hipowerracing.com/hpr/images/stories/superlap/superlapcol19.jpg

It certainly screwed up our original plan to use the 1st and 2nd session for practice,
and for Rob to learn the track in the CRX as he has never been on this track before.
So Scott and Ivan rushed down to the nearest hardware store and we had an ingenious idea to get a truck's tool box,
chop the top off, flip it over, and fasten it to the car as our cover.

Race Day 11:30am
Tool box saved the day!!

An hour later, we arrived back with a galvanised tool box, an angle grinder,
an electric drill, and some aluminium strips.

http://hipowerracing.com/hpr/images/stories/superlap/superlapcol08.jpg

We had to grin it and bear it whilst we fixed the cover in the pit,
listening to the sound of roaring engines and smelling the smoke of the brakes from cars in our group zooming past us as they raced in session 1.

http://hipowerracing.com/hpr/images/stories/superlap/superlapcol09.jpg

Race Day 1:30pm
Session 2:

After lunch we were all ready, and the CRX passed the scrutineering.
We are all so excited to bring the CRX out so that Rob could get some practice runs in session 2.

http://hipowerracing.com/hpr/images/stories/superlap/superlapcol12.jpg

Rob drove the car out confidently while the rest of the crew were almost jumping up and down from the excitement and anxiousness.

http://hipowerracing.com/hpr/images/stories/superlap/superlapcol15.jpg

1st lap 1min30secs, 2nd lap 1min28secs, 3rd lap 1min24secs, 4th lap 1min23sec, 5th lap 1min22secs -
Rob was cutting down the lap times on every run. learning as he was driving; he was taking every corner smoother and faster than the last.
The 6th lap 1min21secs. Just as the CRX's timing improved as Rob's confidence and knowledge of the car and the track grew, we saw the CRX slow down.
DAMN!!! An EV06 flipped on the track,
leaving us disappointed because we were only on the track for 5 minutes and a red flag meant that the rest of session 2 had to be cancelled.

http://hipowerracing.com/hpr/images/stories/superlap/superlapcol16.jpg
After the 6 laps in session 2, we were placed 25th out of 35 cars overall and second in our class, behind Proconcepts car with a gap of 1.07 seconds.
We were disappointed and were doubtful that the day will turn for the better.

Race Day 3.30Pm
Session 3:

Since we only had this last session to lay a good time, we put new tyres on and prepped the car for the final session.

http://hipowerracing.com/hpr/images/stories/superlap/superlapcol23.jpg

The whole team worked extremely hard to make sure that every aspect of the CRX was at its optimal.
The rest was pretty much up to Rob.

http://hipowerracing.com/hpr/images/stories/superlap/superlapcol25.jpg

Rob drove like a man possessed in session 3,
improving from a time of 1min24secs to consistent low 1min19secs.
We could have improved our timing further if we had a clear run.

http://hipowerracing.com/hpr/images/stories/superlap/superlapcrx.jpg

Even though we pitted in twice, we still could not get a clear run as we were always stuck behind slower cars.

http://hipowerracing.com/hpr/images/stories/superlap/superlapcol29.jpg

After session 3 we were clueless of our actual timing.
But we knew we must have been really close to Proconcepts' timing of 1min19.8 sec.

RACE DAY 5:00PM
VICTORY!!

When the results was out, we were announced as the winner of 2 classes -
"FASTEST FWD OPEN CLASS" and "FASTEST NA OPEN CLASS".
The CRX did a time of 1min19.03secs, placing us 16th in a total of 65 competing cars.

http://hipowerracing.com/hpr/images/stories/superlap/superlapcol33.jpg

After the prize giving ceremony, we quickly packed the pit and loaded the car into Scott's flatbed again.
What a day we had and we were all looking to head back for a well deserved celebration and much needed rest.
