Hi guys

just wondering if your water pump is bust..
1. will you know it just by listening? i.e will it make a noise?

2. if the seals for the pump are gone.. to replace them is this a major job?... i.e needing to take the timing belt off etc removing the water pump itself?

thanks for your help!

well you'd probably see water leaking from the passenger side

if the seals gone then usually you'd just replace the timing belt and water pump at once since its coming off anyway

thanks for that,

just wondering sounds like a pretty major job. do you know roughly how much parts + labour would cost?

you should hear the bearing rattle if its fkd, as well as what is mentioned above...........search will find water pump covered. Also if you are handy on the tools you could DIY

the thing was ..
ive put a container under there for the past couple of nights.. nothing came out..
then this morning checked and there was a puddle under it.. (just my luck to not catch it whilst it was leaking..)
stuff that came out was coolant/water mix... :S

will try again today...

thats it, generally the leak won't occur until the motor is off...

The pump on my van went bust recently but it didn't leak, instead the bearing started to rattle and you can hear the propeller grinding on the inside

it's a pretty full on job to do it as yes you do have to take off the timing belt, you can diy it if you are handy with the spanners. I did the timing belt at the same time since the car had done 170K and not knowing the full history i didn't want to risk it. Turned out the belt had been done but they didn't do the pump so it stuffed up.

Anyhow, long story short, i think payed about 70-80bux for the pump on my civic (did that one before the van) and you can do it yourself

generally, if the pump has leaked coolant onto the timing belt you should replace the belt even if it is new as the coolant reduces the integrity of the belt. last thing u want is the belt to snap or slip.

what happens if it just dies? like no power goes to it and it stops pumping?
is that possible?
you won't hear any noises and the car will just overheat right?

well its belt driven, so depending on how it dies
if it seizes you've got bigger problems than a $150 pump on your hands
remember it is driven by the timing belt too

water pump is powered by the timing belt,if the belt breaks,u'll soon know, the whole motor will just stop dead

ohh okay..
i thought it would be like a fish tank pump or something where power just makes it pump.
lol noob i know :P

so i guess when the pump dies then you will definately know becauuse the belts will still spin it but it will crack and make noises and then crack/blow up and then leak... :P

My advice to everyone with Water Pump Leak:
- If you have to top up everyday or two, REMOVE THE THERMOSTAT if your going to drive it for a while before getting it fixed
- DO NOT be tight-arse and keep filling with water if you can't afford to fix it ASAP

Because:
- The system can't maintain pressure because of waterpump leak, your engine will overheat and the high temp increase in water pressure will escape through the leak instead of opening the thermostat... even if you have a low temp thermo. It's better to run the engine a bit cooler than let it overheat, i now have sudden cylinder 3 pressure drop.. hopefully it's just the head gasket instead of a warped head!!
- This icy morning today, my car overheated because the water in the radiator froze and couldn't circulate anyway.

btw i have a water leak in cyl3... pretty bad one that it misfires.. had to regap plugs to 0.8mm just to make sure it fires... it's at least a head gasket or warped head from overheating.. hope it's not a cracked block... so dudes... get it fixed ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! unless you want an excuse for the head to be off for internal upgrades etc :p

Well when my pump went a few yrs ago, it was leaking, bearing was rattling like crazy! then trying to get it home, i shot the belts off and had to get a tow!
So i think you should dignose the problem before its too late!
