Hi all

I've got a EK9 lsd gearbox (same as 96' dc2r I suppose).
When I drive around town I cannot shift into 4th.
On track, when Vtec on, then i can slam it to 4th with a bit of force.

What went wrong?

cheers,

4th gear synchros are shot? Have you tried double clutching to see if it gets into 4th?

Definatly syncros, i got spare brand new 3,4 and 5/r syncro. May also be gear selector sleeve damaged by worn syncro

If you can't shift into 4th when the engine is off, then it is another problem, might not be the synchros.

sounds like a gearbox apart job

you also could have bent shift forks or shafts in the box as well as syncros

Quite possible, either way its gonna have to be taken apart for inspection, nothing that fluids can fix. If u need syncros just let me know.

Thanks

Sorry 2 hijack the thread.. but i hav a similar but different prob with my 4th... at low rpm shifts no worries but anything 3k rpm+ theres a crunch, noticebly louder the higher the rpm.

I had my gearbox fluid changed about 2 months ago n this problem has began occuring about 2 weeks ago. Havnt had any mis-shifts. Syncro or gearbox fluid related?

Unfortunatly i had the exact same issue with my 2nd 3rd and 4th gear, so i think that does single out the syncros since the fluid was changed recently.

it's not the syncros that cost the money, it's the labour to replace it.

backyard job i remove and replace a gearbox for $200ish,replace synchro is another 50-100 or so depending on things.
at a dealership,as an absolute estimate,i would suspect you would be looking around $700, depending how many hours they reckon it takes to get the box on and off, which will prob be something stupid like 5 hours.

for the thread starter, something wrong is going on inside your box (check your shifter isnt bent ofcourse), time to go to a mechanic man, ozhonda cant help with this one

Yeah i figured, its just im tryna estimate how much it wuld set me back coz im sure i'll b able 2 find labour 4 well under $500.

Trust me, its not $50-$100 to replace a synchro or synchro's, Honda quotes about $450 for parts and $450 for labour, anyway yes it can be done cheaper as a diy or just a lower cost mechanic, Other than that the synchros may not be the only issue as was in my case, If a synchro gets worn it then very quickly wears down on the gear selector sleeve which is what grabs onto the synchro so you definatly need to get some funds and then open it up and see what your in for.

Thanks

And hondas quote is for 3,4 and 5/r synchro not including 1 and 2

honda charges $110 per hour for labour on avg
u wont get change from 2k for parts and labour

instead of getting rough ideas from members here how about you go out into the real world and get some quotes , take the best one you want and get it fixed :)

yeh buddy, for sure ozhonda could get you some cheaper labour than the dealership, but you need to go out and get this one diagnosed properly, shop around after you get a diagnosis, you will be surprised how much labour prices vary

i had this problem on dc2 aswell except it also wasnt going into reverse~it wouldn't go in at all car on or off. i talked to a guy on here and he said it was better idea to just replace the engine at that price~it was true aye ~i had quotes for about 1500+plus new gear box parts~ that was one of the cheapest at professional places~

yeah i doubt i'll b gettin this fixed up anytime soon, n i got a friend who im sure will do this 4 a carton. (obvioulsy if i provide all parts etc.) But im kinda hoping 2 do a B18R (hopefuly!!!) conversion n have been 4 quite some time so the gearbox will go out the window in a bout a year, will prolly stick it out til then as the problem is real minor at this stage anyway.

Good luck with the conversion, lets not hope the same thing happenes like in my case (metal ring came off synchro and "ate" some other synchros and made lots of debris. If its very minor should be fine for now, try replace with honda 06 mtf if not aleady.

Thanks
