I suppose it's possible, but it would be rather a difficult job to do while working under a car especially when it comes to checking clearances etc maybe some of the other members who have had more experience with this stuff can shed more light on the subject. If you watch omnimans 200hp B16a DVD he pretty much rebuilds the entire engine with the block still mounted in the vehicle.

if you only have to do big end then do it in the car,
remove the sump and off you go. lock the crank to perform yoru clearence checks. no need to remove the engine or head .

Why do you need to change them?
Have you spun a bearing?
If so, changing the bearings alone will not address the root cause of the problem.
Further, it will not rectify and damage cause by the previous bearing failure.
Bare in mind a spun bearing will have likley affected the BE bore in the connecting rod & therefore afected the bearing crush.
It's the crush that stops the bearing from spinning, not the aligment tang.
So be warned, you could be just wasting time & money.
IMO, if you're going to do the job, pull the engine & do it right.
& if you're changing them for the sake of it, save your money.

Get a 3rd opinion, at "tap" is normally top end. Whereas a "knock" is usually bottom end.A big end failure is normally acompanied by a loss in oil pressure as well.
Get a piece of 1" ID tube and put one end on the side of the oil pan and the other on your ear, after you are finished feeling silly.......have a listen, if you can hear a deep knock or a rumble then it is big end damage.
TODA 100% on bearing crush if that rod is blue.... bin it.

True, if its a bigend ur gonna hear it, KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK! with every rotation but it may even not be noticable above idle or when warm, but should be very noticable on startup.
Hope it helps
Thanks
