Hey guys

good idea abt the bike forum...

just wondering whats the process of getting a bike licence in vic? (This isnt just for me..i know some of it...would be good for those who dont know how to obtain a licence but are thinking of getting one :) )

some qns..
Like, how do we go for lessons? Where do we go for Ls and Ps? Does everyone have to get Ls then Ps then u get ur full licence or can u go straight to full licence (like say if u have a full drivers licence...i think i heard something like this before but not sure)?
learning/reading material? is there like a book we have to read (like we do for learners licence for cars) then we go and do the learners test?

so pretty much just an outline of the steps/process for gettin ur bike licence :)

also any links would be good as well
cheers!

best to refer to vicroads for those questions, as im sure they will have something on their website.

i highly doubt that you'd be able to go straight to your full licence in VIC, as NSW goes through L's P's then fulls.

going straight to your fulls would be an easy way to kill yourself too, if your inexperienced and decide to get a cbr600/r6 or the bigger litre bikes.

Move to QLD FTW!

Seriously! The missus and I got our bike licences through Q-Ride.
We just had to have our open car licence, did a 3hr course on their bikes, and walked away with open bike licences.
Easy as that. Cost $150 each.

To get your licence in Victoria you have to go through an accredited centre. You attend usually three sessions (all of which are in a group). First they teach you basic riding stuff (playing with the clutch, how to keep upright etc). Then you progress to more detailed stuff and the final lesson is a written and practical test. All of this takes place at an accredited centre (which basically has a closed in carpark setup).

In Victoria you cant go to a straight full licence (and even if you could I wouldnt recommend it).

You dont need a car licence to go for a bike licence (however you will need to sit an extra written test on road rules).

It is very handy to have driven a manual car before to understand how gears and a clutch work.

Most of the training websites have good examples of what goes on and if you are very nervous and unsure try a pre-training course.

I would recommend HART, for 1 thing it is supported by honda, but at the same time the instructors are really good. As they don't just teach you how to pass but prepare you for open road riding.

I got my learners from HART and will be going for my licence with them soon.

I'll 2nd the HART recommendation. Although I did do my P's elsewhere as it was cheaper. The P's test seemed heaps easier than the L's test??

HART has a special where you can buy a Honda jacket and gloves for really cheap.

nsw and sydney - u do a stay upright course..... i think in sydney there is a wait to get in as there are a lots of ppl wanting to get a licence...

u hold your L's for 3 months then you need to do a course to get ur P's then once u have held your P's for 1 yr then you automatically get ur full's... so it's a long process cna't just jump straight onto a full licence... etc...

hmmm no.. the course is designed for people who have never riding a bike before..

www.stayupright.com.au

and have a look at the info on the site - i had riding a bike before doing the course and it is very good on teaching you road craft etc... teaches you what to look out for that you would not think of.

Dont worry about failing the course either - it's hard to fail the course... as long as you are co-ordinated you'll be fine :)

g/l with it
