I just had my 1999 Civic serviced last Friday for its 60,000km service. The service advisor told me I should think about getting my timing belt changed in the near future coz they have a five year life cycle or 100,000km life cycle.

I realise my car is a low mileage car for the year it was made, so any truth in Honda telling me I need my timing belt changed soon? How do I know it needs changing, any symptoms of it failing?

I change mine every 70,000 on my EF9 whether it needs it or not. I had one skip teeth badly on my ED6 and bent 3 valves - I don't take chances as the B16A would die from it. 80,000 was what I was quoted - so 10,000 before is a good margin in my books.

Yes 100 000KM or 5 years, I did my Crx at 33, 000KM at 5 years. the dealer is not pulling your chain.

The actual timing belt (OEM Honda) is quite cheap, its just they charge about $200 to install it. But at least you will be given the assurance that your engine wont spontainisly self implode on itself.

100,000 Kms is on the Honda Service Schedule. Although I think changing at 75,000 kms intervals would be better.
