hey im currently acquiring a b18c that blows black smoke and have confirmed the problem is the piston rings...i was just wondering how much to full recondtion the block and head. im talking port and polish also.. and shaving the head. This is with the engine out of the motor ofcourse..
and will i need a new gearbox to fit onto my car car (GSi) or could i use my GSi gearbox.. is it really that much of a difference from VTi-R box n GSi

been quoted $600 for a port and polish on top of $1269 to rebuild the head and cut out valve seats... this is just labour cost to install some performance parts i already have (ie valve train + cams, milling, and specific tolerances).... but.. every shop charges a different amount and i trust this shop and owner.

the head always goes to a "head specialist" as a performance engine builder rarely have the tools to do the actual job

***EDIT***
how was it confirmed that it is your piston rings without removing the head? compression test? lower compression can also be a result of leaky valve stem seals or valves not seating properly..

Re-building can become very expensive very quickly...Be prepared to spend some big time $$$$$$$$...and don't cut any corners!!

black smoke doesnt mean the piston rings are fukked.... it just means it is running rich

i agreee, it could be anything like valve stem seals...

u cant just say what it is with out testing or diagnosing. N black smoke is usually over fueling.

if its valve stem seals should only really happen in the morning or after the car has been sitting for a while as the oil will leak down past the seals and pool up. if it happens on the road then its more than likely rings. but if he's doing performance work id be pulling the bottom end out anyway
