Does anyone know of a heavy gear knob for the s2k??

Something to improve the shift feel...

I'm using the knob from mavenmotorsports.com

lighter shift knob will improve the shift feel IMO.

gives the shifter a lower center of gravity and really lets you feel what's going on in the box.

heavy knob makes the shifts feel very generic and can hide the feel of a below average shifting technique.

Ok.. i heard the heavy knob can help with the notchy feeling between 2nd 3rd ect..

thats what i mean, a heavy knob will hide the feeling from the box compared to a lighter knob.

Just depends what ur personal preference is.:thumbsup:

I rate it as lovely. I have gone from the shitty stock Euro knob to the DC5R aluminium knob (which is the same as the S2k's) and then to the Maven (472g). Not sure if Maven still makes these knobs now, but a reasonable and cheaper alternative would be the Skunk2 knobs (440g).

gold isnt really a very heavy metal. maybe lead? and then you can just mould it around the shifter with you palms.

Density of gold is 19.3g/cm3 while the density of lead is 11.4g/cm3. So gold will be heavier than lead, given the same volume of the gearknob.

Nah, it would be 1.17kg only, for the same volume as the maven knob.

A nerd with a heavy and shiny knob! That's for sure. :D

Anyway, gold and lead make poor gearknobs because they will scratch very easily. Plus, having lead on your hands after driving out for lunch means you'll be brain-damaged before you hit 40. :p

Didn't matter to me because I used a cabletie to hold the boot up to the height of the locking nut.

it wasnt the asthetic side of a countersunk knob i like its the shorter throw.

i think the skunk2 gear knob is the same size as the standard s2k gear knob so hopefully the throw isnt made longer. can anybody confirm this?

Yeah, it is about the same as the stock s2k knob except in weight. You could machine out the lower threads yourself.

i just ordered the skunk2 ill post when it arrives. i dont think ill machine anything though, too difficult. its made from stainless steal that is not fun to drill and tap.

Can't believe no one suggested a Muz knob.

Heavy, counter sunk and available in a number of finishes.

that Muz knob did not have a "H" pattern which is illeagal in perth, and i dont like gear knobs that are fitted with grub srews they eventually get loose and after tighening them too much they round out. happen to my $180 momo.:(

Hmmmm, and having a H pattern makes the knob directional. Being counter sunk means no room for a locking nut so grub screw is required.

Seems you may have some conflicting requirements there.

My Maven knob doesn't have the H pattern too. What I did was to get a H pattern sticker which comes with a Razo knob and stick that on the plastic trim around the shift boot.

Or you could always laser engrave it at the gift shops.

What does everyone think about the Carbing shift knob?

Umm, I've got a heavy Mugen shift know and it does NOT hide the notchy feeling between 2nd and 3rd. It amplifies it.

The problem can be solved by rev matching or shifting at low revs.

Anyone else have other solutions? At this point, I think the notchy problem lies between the steering wheel and the seat.

S2kane
20-08-2008, 11:43 AM
Yeah... Rev matching wont help with the notchy feeling because when you are shifting
You disengage the drive to the gear box.
( unless you are not using the clutch lol ) rev matching.. or heal and toeing.. that's more of a smoother shifting technique to save your transmission or if you are on a motorbike or older car it will prevent compression lock up..

Our problem is more the synchro's playing up.

I didn't know Mugen made a heavy shift knob?? you don't happen to know the part number do you?

i got the Skunk2 gear knob yesterday and it is much heavy then stock. i was very skeptical if it would feel any different but to my suprise it does offer more direct shift feel, it falls into gear easier & smoother.

npz mate,

its the exact size and shape of OEM ap1 aluminium

i ordered the older one with the big "skunk2" written down the side but they sent me the new one was "skunk2" written small and on the back of the knob:(

so if you get it from ebay USA you will most likely get the new style (still same size and weight though)

No sorry I don't have the part number. Well, it looks big and ugly and it feels heavy but it suits a driver with a big hand and it gets the job done.

But this website might help: http://www.inlinefour.com/mugnewstylsh.html

I ended up going for a Greddy counter weight knob.. at around 400 grams it should do the trick

http://www.shopresponse.com/greddy_counter_weight_shift_knob.jpg

( the one i got is a 6 sp btw)

i was almost going to a blox one which is 450 grams but i like the spherical shape of the Greddy version... plus you get a few different colour shift pattern things you can change around.

The science behind a weighted knob working is that it gives you more leverage so requiring less effort to shift

I'll let you know what its like when i get it.
