Heyo..

So i was thinking of getting some new plates recently.. but then it crossed my mind.. if its not stated anywhere in the laws and regulations etc etc... is it legal to repaint the License plates to a different colour??

I've got the plain old black on yellow...

I was thinking of doing it black on silver or silver on black??

I've searched, and im sure its been brought up before.. but i cant find anything on it..

Say it is illegal... but i do a good job on the repainting..what are the chances cops are goner notice right? :p

NB: Please replace all words "license" with "number" Lol.. license plates -.- what was i thinking...

no because the colour is relevant to the state identification. Only chance to get caught is if a cop decides to run your lates thru the database , and declare your coloured plates fraudulent or a defect lol

You would be busted pretty quickly, if you repaint your number plates they won't have a reflective surface any longer and a cop just has to drive past you at night to see your number plate has been painted.

Rta calls them "Special Plates"... So what i'm thinking is doing a generic/ replica version of them =P

In response to geeang: i was thinking of doing a quick sand + primer + colour + clear coat

the fine will still prob work out cheaper than the outrageous annual fees the RTA want for some different colour paint.

its like parking, its cheaper to pay the fines then continually pay for parking meters.......

Yes, but every so often you park in the wrong spot, they put a boot on your car and it gets towed!

still prob cheaper & less inconvenient than continually feeding meters.

Yeah you won't just get fined for painted plates, you'll get defected as well and that's not very convenient.

I thought of this idea before, I just recently changed to black and gold plates, the format and placement of the characters exactly the same, only the paint is different. If i painted it myself to be exaclty the same the real black and gold, how would the cops know?

Then eventually after not paying your fines, they take the car from you and send you a letter on where to collect your cube :D

just pay for the specialised plate depending on wat you want to get it should only be aroun 160 per year even the full custom plates its only 400 so i dont see why u would do such a stupid thing for like painting ur original number plates and it is also recorded down in the rta which colour number plate you have whether its orginal black on yellow or black on white and so on.

$100 a year for different colour paint,fair???????????????

$500 a year for your choice of letters stamped into a bit of tin plate, fair??????????

wish i could charge those sorts of amounts for such little labour done & such little material provided,id be worth a fortune................

i pay my fines Zdster so no probs there

There are a multitude of things in life mostly related to government regulated things that arent fair mate.. unforunately u have few options..
u can bitch about it but in general obey the rules
or
u can break the rules and get fined then bitch about the fines

the one thing i dont understand is why come here and ask is this legal? get told it isnt the argue about why it should be legal/why its not fair and do it anyway lol
