so does that mean if cars were made pre epa cant be used? and all cars like 5 years ago that dont meet standards now cant be used?

lol fair enough for bikes, but cars?

bit of a joke, guys must be heavily invested in helmet companies.

As long as it's not over 12 years old, it's fine. It makes sense really...

As long as it's not over 12 years old, it's fine. It makes sense really...

do u know this for a fact or just from that thread?

one person saying 12 years is ok,another saying it must have the new AS1698:2006 sticker????

Its certainly an issue when i seem to be reading my $800 worth of 2 year old, worn about 10 times, helmet is not gonna measure up to some feeble test that standards australia have come up with.Im sure it will measure up to the new standards & way beyond.

If ANDRA want to change the rules,to force more money out of us,then i suggest they pay for their own independant tests to comply helmets within a decent useable lifespan of 5 years,or introduce the new requirements more gradually say over a 3 year time span ending in the lame arse 160km/h cars with a roof & no roll cages like myself.

CRXer
06-08-2008, 06:17 PM
thats exactly what it should be,a hard rule for new helmet purchase, with the new rules clearly outlined to all,& a gradual phasing out of existing helmets, the slower classes being more gradual than the top classes.

So from the 1st of september all helmets must comply to the new standard?

Remember that these new helmet regs are in force AS OF YESTERDAY!!!

So if you don't have a complying helmet and go to WSID or Willowbank expect to be shown the door. Whether there will be a "grace" period I have no idea.

hey guys been to the Andra website, but it only seems to say that recommended standards only. Nothing about this being the required standard now.

Can anyone comment on this?

^^^your right this is stupid.. been reading the dragster site:

debacle355 wrote:
After talking to Andra-David Baker , I found out that any helmet with original/common AS1698 is not the right one to use.
It must be AS/NZS1698:2006 or AS/NZS1698.

Now that may sound the same when you say it fast, but AS1698 & AS/NZS1698 are different standards.

As explained it doesn't mean it has to have the :2006 prefix on the end, as long as it has the NZS incorporated, because thats when the australian & nz standards were brought together at the same time.

AS1698 = NO
AS/NZS1698:2006 = YES
AS/NZS1698 =YES

Thats the way it was explained to me, maybe one of the ANDRA guys could clarify that.

AS/NZS1698

It seems to me that's a NZ standard? why would we be complying to NZ standards?

Limbo
04-11-2008, 08:54 AM
ok just rang WSID and spoke with a lady there.
Apparently you can still use a AS1698, but it must have a manufacture date that is less than 12yr old, not the date you brought the helmet.

Also AS1698:2006 are not available for sale in NSW currently. You can only get these in VIC. She told me that's the stupidity of the standard lol

AS/NZS1698

It seems to me that's a NZ standard? why would we be complying to NZ standards?

i read the whole thread... its gay...

its coz when AS & NZS were combined there were new manufacturing testing standards... in addition to just AS... but no one in that thread was willing to pay $35 to read the full regulation book lol

yeah i was up all night reading that stupid thread. It didn't really make much sense. And it contridicted itself alot. Then i went to the ANDRA site which wasn't much help also as it only says it wanted comment on the item and that they were looking at the new standard. Also the WSID site just said helmet.

P.S a Snell standard will get you out of it all, go figure

I'm pretty sure if your car is 'race spec',then it falls under ANDRA rules, then you need the new standard helmet.AS/NZS1698.

Otherwise the old one is fine.AS1698.

Race spec I think is 12 seconds or less???

hey guys, any drag racing or track racing vehicle falls within ANDRA regulations.
The old standard is fine so long as you can prove the helmet is less than 12 yrs old, or have a SNELL certification.

don't buy doesn't have anything about Standards approval or Snell.

Easist way to get a cheap complying helmet is....

1) goto a motor bike store, and try on helmets. Make sure the helmet fits you in size. The guy there should be able to help you with getting a proper fitting one.
2) go on ebay and look the the size and what you want.

Another tip is dirtbike helmets are easier to breath & still pass the ADRs :) I got a O'Neill helmet cheap online :) SNELL approved

go to a motorcycle shop and try some on. It needs to fit snug otherwise its crap and if you do get into an accident it won't help. I spoke with a friend who repairs motorcycles and he showed me some wrecked ones and explained stuff to me

don't do that different helmets sit differently, even though they are the same size. Some will require a slightly different size. Trust me try some on first before buying them.
You jsut need to go into a shop and try them not buy one

you mean bought

not brought.

Brought means to carry or take something to a place.

Examples,

1) i bought the helmet on the 12th of december 2006. (correct)
2) i brought the helmet to the race track. (correct)
3) not the date you brought the helmet (incorrect unless the topic you refer to is inherently known to be an event where the activity of bringing an object is required, purchasing isn't such an activity)

Ok, well - to get back on topic, I dont know why you even invest in a helmet, Sexc86, I mean, its obvious that there's nothing of value to protect

May I suggest an ice cream bucket. You can even spray paint it in delft blue to match the colour of your EG

I vouch for that as well. Almost sent home last Friday night because the helmet didnt comply with andra rules and when i confronted the official why is it that it was fine on a Wednesday night the week before with this helmet his response was 'we need the numbers'. So there is a loop hole in there regulations and it all depends on who scruteneers your car and helmut as well. WSID & ANDRA have become like the RTA a money revenue raising scheme. So I am trying to work out why are Friday nights different to Wednesday nights in the eyes of WSID.

Answer is right there I guess. More people there on Friday nights so they can afford to turn ppl away. Wednesdays are obviously more quiet and they'll take what they can get.
