They have to be secured in place, aka a welded bracket for most states.
For melbourne I know they need to be in an enclosed box due to their laws.

Bit off topic..... but i still don't see why a pod filter should be regarded as an illegal modification ...-.-

Have a read on this doco:
http://epanote2.epa.vic.gov.au/EPA/publications.nsf/2f1c2625731746aa4a256ce90001cbb5/c90ec843f3bbbe8fca256d9f00181c59/$FILE/1031.pdf
That's for Victoria. It says:
Dry element pod type air cleaners are
permitted on EFI vehicles. Oiled, oil-soaked or
fluid-treated elements are not permitted. Any
sensors integral to the original system must
be retrofitted to the same approximate
location.
So, open dry pod is ok, but K&N is ILLEGAL (oil soaked).

why would that be i wonder...

I think it's because the oil may get onto MAP and other kind of sensors. This then causes the air fuel ratio go out of wack.
I don't know why they don't allow pods on other state though.

Perhaps you need to get an engineering cert when you install a POD filter? hehehe... :P

if it's exposed then more or less.
just DIY a box for it.

suposedly an exposed filter is not supose to be illegal unless it adds to induction noise.
But all cops will put it in the category as 'not standard' and you will still get defected for it. It doesn't matter if its engineered, you will still get defected & it will need to be cleared.
The only way to really get it fixed is to box the pod.
Did alot of checking on this issue before.

thats exactly the reason plus risk of engine fire from a backfire igniting the oiled filter.
In NSW, reason pods aren't allowed is primarily noise issue as per the DECC website (EPA equivalent). I had a cai with the pod in the fender.. was an instant fail item... and this was during an EXHAUST noise test.

Say... a coppa does pull you over and check your car out.. and you get defected for the POD amongst other things... what happens straight away apart from the fine?

When do you have to do the exhaust noise test etc and emissions?

When do you have to do the exhaust noise test etc and emissions?
Sometimes when police pull you over they test how loud your car is.
As far as I know qld is 100db as the cars output at 4000rpm.
Id have to check but thats what it is if I recall.
And some police can say your car doesnt pass emissions which has happened to a few people ive heard of. They went to a exhaust shop that can do emission readings and they did the tests to make sure it was legal.

so would a arc airbox be legal?
iam not sure but i have never been defected with a pod~but when i was using ARC airbox i got defected~
to me it feels like they just defect if it looks good~i was using apexi black podfilter so not much bling and no defect~but as you know arc is shiny silver with red filter so auto defect for blingage lol
why wouldnt it??? its just a muffler isnt it???
Hmm i mean't as a catback and possibly loudness?

True!
ANYTHING that is NOT OEM is defectable. Enclosed airbox or not..., the Mugen intake is illegal aswell.
as to modifcations to intakes..
if they increase in noise. you fail. simple as that. enclosed or not.. it is still defectable. as limbo as stated, cops will put you down as "non standard modifications to induction" and it will still be defectable.

I don't know what I've got since i haven't had the time to open up my box (On the BB6 you gotta take the whole f*cking battery assembly out to take off the box cover)....
But mine when you rev it past 700rpm it makes a whistling sound... which gets randoms coming up to me and saying "Do you have a turbo bro!?"... It only makes a whistling sound as well, doesn't amplify any other sound (from what I can here anyway)
What kind of filter would that be? (The whistling isn't 'that' loud..)

id say you have a hole in ya filter sucking dirty air...... ahhha just messing usually a whistling will come from air sucking through a small gap. but if it sounds cool and its not effecting anything who cares lol
