Been shopping around and I come across all these helmets that are 'Australian Approved'

Just wanted to confirm that the required standard is AS/NZS 1698

If anyone can recommend shops also that'd be great... not overly looking to spend too much on a helmet unless the mrs actually allows me to get a motorbike next year :p

Something around $100 or preferably less? or is that a reall tight arse thing to say? That price is based on motorbike riders telling that a decent helmet can be had for around $200

***EDIT***
sort of a continuation to this thread i was asking in but specific to the 'standards'

Ahhh sweet. thanks Jase thats all i needed to know!!

AS/NZS1698 superceded AS1698 but was just wanting to know that I was looking at the correct standard!! :)

***EDIT***
nice, 100% confirmed by the first post on that homepage

New Helmet regulations
Not sure if everybody is awear that as of the 1/9/08 all helmets that are AS 1698 standard will be no longer useable, as the new regulations must be AS/NZ 1698:2006 & this covers all andra classes & meetings IE: street meets, testntunes, major meets & all national meetings, the 2006 is a new test standard not a manufacture date, as i have a helmet (feb 2007) 18months old & can no longer be used.
The new test is the way a helmet is drop tested when manufactured, the old way was droped upside down verticlly now its dropped at a slight 45 degree to the verticial as in most motorcycle accidents the rider falls on a 90 degree angle & not a 180 degree from the upright position , ( from what ive been told).
what i cant understand is why this should affect sedan, dragster & altered based vehicles when they have a harness, a roll cage & in sedan based vehicles a roof to protect them.
just wondering if people were awear of this

hang on.. so does that mean that all of you who have a helmet stamped AS1698 can't use em anymore? or is that for ANDRA licensed cars only?

***EDIT***
bah.. found the answer.

An age limit of twelve years will be placed on all helmets, based on the date of manufacture (not the date of the relevant helmet standard)

You could probably get a base Nolan open faced helmet for car duties for the $100 mark.

For MC work you'd want to spend a bit more and find one that fits your head properly. $300 should see you right.

i understand the fitment issue for MC duties.. but i don't need to get a fully fitted one for car use ay? i don't really like tight stuff rubbing my head

Within reason of course. If a particular helmet hurts your head or gives you a headache after 10 minutes then it's not a good buy, whatever the intended use.

I recently bought a new helmet for MC which complies with AS1698 - it's open faced, comfortable and cost me $80 brand new from Helmet House in Perth. Good first helmet i reckon
