Soak the oil off with a tissue, then wipe it with alcohol. Heck, you can soak it in alcohol too.

You're talking about a headlight bulb right? Is so then yes you should clean it thoroughly.
If its like an indicator bulb, not as important

One quick question: why is it so vital to never touch the glass of the headlight bulbs? Does the oil from your fingers burn and go black when you turn on the bulb?

The oil from your fingers coat part of the glass on the bulb, making that spot overheat and will cause it to crack.

I didn't know this was so important when i changed my bulbs and i may have touched the glass while changing... but it's been alright for the past few weeks!

If the glass were to crack, is it a catastrophic failure? Or will the bulb just go out and I'll need to get a new one?

Thanks :D

The bulb will just burn out and you will have to replace it. I don't recall seeing the whole bulb shatter because of touching the glass.
