Hey guys,

I'm after a set of 6.5" components speakers which will be going in my s2k. I have a budget of around $500/600. What are the best bang for your bucks splits for this price? I'm not choosy on brand names etc, just as long as their of high quality.

Is that budget just for splits or with install/product/etc?

I would also consider leaving a little room for sound deadening for the front doors. It will make a big difference as I did this as well in my former S2000.

Also have you decided where you want to put the tweeters? AP1 or AP2?

Ap1 doesn't have room for tweeter unless you custom mount in the doors.

Ap2 seems to have tweeter pods on the doors already from factory.

Also any split you buy for that price range will required a decent amount of power. A Stock/Aftermarket headunit will not be sufficient enough.

Good setup for S2000 would be;

Good brand Aftermarket Headunit with Parametric EQ
Power Amplifier for the front stage
Dynamat Door kit <--- Really recommend this fir S2K (Too much Road Noise)
Then a Pro install.

You should be thinking about all this before deciding what splits to buy.

Buying good speakers in one thing. Making them sound good in a vehicle is another.

Hope this helps.

I've got an alpine 9855R with modifry chip (makes stock audio control panel functional with aftermarket headunit). 2 x jl audio amps, 300/4 and 500/1, 4-channel and mono respectively. I've also purchased the rear speaker pod mount through ebay which works a treat (give ability to install rear speakers in the S). I've got a pair of 6" VR JLs mounted in the rears and I had some top of the range pioneers from my civic, but just recently discovered that one cross over box and speaker were no longer functional. I've already decided where I want to mount my tweeters. My car is an AP1 and $500/600 is dedicated to front splits only.

So back to square one, what are the best bang for your bucks component speakers for $500/600?

And thanks for the input DC5TypeR, I'll have a look into the dynamat door kit.

Focal 165KR2. The KR2 series has been replaced with a new KRX or KX2 series i believe. Quality wise IMO is 10x better than the JL's (coming from an owner of JL VR's) but then again your looking at pretty much double the price of em. They usually retail for around $800 but since its now an "older" model i think you should be able to bargain them down relatively easy to $600 mark.

Another suggestion is to go MB Quartz. I've heard plenty of good things about those splits and price wise they're not as hefty as Focals but apparently almost AS good as Focals. Haven't heard any MQ Quartz myself so let us know if you do go for a soundtest :D

i'd say each to their own, people can say this brand or that brand, but at the end of the day its going to be you're decision as their ears arent yours. you should buy what sounds right for you rather than what sounds right to them. sound right to you?

I would be going for Focals or MB Quartz. I've had pioneer and clarion and blew them both, im not a fan on jap brands when it comes to speakers - they dont seem to handle the power as well as others. It was only my focals that stood the test of time. Very sharp, clear and great mid bass too.

I bought ALPINE SPX-17PRo's for my CRX and i am very very happy with them....Especiacially since i Put dynamat in the doors and floor ...

My advice is to listen to as many sets of speakers as you can fitted to cars....

Go to a large CAR STEREO SPECIALIST SHOP and don't pick a set of speakers based on soley what they sound like on a sound board

I went into northfield car sounds today and had a listen to the focals. I was very impressed! My JL VRs do not compare. I've decided to go with 2 sets of 6.5" compnent focals K2P (older model I think). IMHO, it sounds better than the newer series. Thanks all!

Honestly if it were up to me i would not be getting any splits without an amp. My only reasoning is that most (if not all) splits are rated at 60w rms at Min (if you don't count shittier splits such as sony xplods or even the alpine type-e's). Having said that running splits off H/U will be underpowering them and potential damaging them.

Save up the cash and get both the amp AND splits together along with quality cabling. As stated above from the other people best listen to the splits yourself and you be the judge. We can all give you our opinions but at the end of the day its you listening to the system and not us. So go for gold :D But as an aside I wouldn't rate the Alpine splits (either of em). Too tinny for my taste :S

do yourself a favour and go and listen to some AVI component speakers... available in Sydney through Metrosound in Artarmon... for your money you'll probably grab a set of just above entry level units... he can stage for you the different ranges of speakers he has there, let your ears do the deciding

Go for Infinity + Small amp for both of them. There is couple to choose from, but they are very good quality speakers and sound really nice. Check out their website.
I bought a pair from WOW ages ago, not sure if anyone stocks them around AU, but sure you can get them from ebay.

I recommend Rainbow. I had a set of Germaniums and they were fantastic. Apart from that Focals are also very good.

ICACHA
04-09-2008, 03:56 PM
this might sound strange, BUT what if you go listen to them for yourself and you compare the difference??? go into any of the alberts stores in WA and listen, if thats too hard then be prepared to make a mistake...

Frost_FD

Its hard cause they dont put those models on display....

ICACHA
05-09-2008, 09:45 AM
then dont go for them, or... are you anywhere near alberts cannington? if so go and see simon there, hes the owner and knows what hes doing... he wont steer you wrong...

Frost_FD

I havent tried cannington, but have tried ozzy park aswell and they dont keep those top of the range speakers on display.

Might check it out but will be skeptical to buy if they dont give me a good deal like alberts morley does.

discounts arent worth sh!t if you dont get what you really want, go and listen to as many speakers as you can with 'your' music, just make sure you dont listen to them using MP3's or you might as well just buy crap...

might not be your cup of tea, but some very good recording are Dire Straits Brothers In Arms, Michael Buble, Diana Krall, Nora Jones... you pick :)

Yes thanks for your feed back guys.
Will be considering all the brands you have suggested. Im going to singapore and thailand end of year so maybe ill wait for then to maybe grab them at a good price. Getting my new dash soon so i will replace head unit before the speakers and since our aussie dollar isnt preforming well lately i will hold on buying the speakers from the US.

or maybe end up with fakes and sell them off to an unsuspecting person on the forum :)

Hahaha

Well i guess i am a tightass always trying to get a bargin on what ever i buy. I think of it this way, the more i save now the more i have to spend on modding =D

Ill make sure i dont get fakes but one can only do so much and wait for the product to come. I know that the low range MB quart are made in asia now so i wont be getting those when the other ranges are still made in germany. If i do get fakes ill just sell them on ebay as MADE IN ASIA! hahaha

I dont think averson read the all the post properly... i stated that because other alberts rip you off so i wouldnt go to any other alberts... i asked the alberts at ozzy park how much he can do the CDA 9887 for, and he said he will give me 50 bucks off... wow 50 bucks...

It sounds like some of us are jealous imo :p

so your saying, its ok for it to look good and sound sh!t?

thats where a lot of people are at the moment, their rides look kool, but when you jump in and have a listen they sound like arse, but dont like it when someone tells them, its always someone elses fault hehehehehe

not confirmed yet, but apparently (personally havent confirmed this) MB are moving production away from germany and over to china, dont be surprised if all MB is made in china now...

once something is made in asia its more than likely going to be made as a copy, or if its popular then the asians will make cheap copies and try and flog it to the unsuspecting public, that is why you will find genuine items with authorised specialist stores.

there are some chains out there mixing product bought from asia with locally sourced product, no one knows what they are getting, but the store is getting richer by ripping you off the unsuspecting buyer who walks into the chain...

funny how people will modify the crap out of the outside of the car, but are too scared to cut/modify anything to do with the inside :p

I guess we werent on the same page after all....

I understand your concern and yes i should really go in and listen to the speakers before i buy which i will. I just wanted a more wide spread opinion then just going off what one or two people have said to go for this and go for that.

My conclusion is i would go for MB quart premium or reference as most people have said MB quart do very well in the clarity area and i will watch out for the fakes... i dont mind them being made in asia as long as they perform well... everything is made in china these days anyways... look at my sub and amp... made in china lol alpine

Well in the real world, most people wouldn't ask someone's opinion on a forum about what speakers you think sound good. That person would trust his/her own better judgement and use what god gave them, they are called ears and are located at either end of the head, they capture sound and decode it as being pleasant or a discomfort. Can you guage that by what ones opinion is about something without experiencing it for yourself? Tell me yes and I'll call you a freak :p

People have to learn to decipher what I say, I like talking in code like the old cold war days :)

If after opinions, I'd go as far as saying if it's mechanical then there is only one place in Sydney for your Honda and thats Hanny's Performance in Smithfield.

In car audio you're taking your chances there... Yes there are a lot of skilled people out there and I won't say who they are as I would be seen to be bias, but one thing is high on my list and thats HONESTY, if I don't see/hear that then I don't go back for a re-match...

Have a look at the Hertz HSK165 splits. They are reasonably priced at $379 retail (you could haggle for a better price or buy from FHRX and Marty gives you 10% off the list price which covers the postage and he is more than helpful)
I have the Alpine Type X in my Euro and to be honest I don't think they are worth the money. Thay are OK but nothing special. I think that Boston are a better speaker for my taste in music and I am kicking myself for not putting in the Boston Pro's.
It all comes down to personal taste. Just because someone else likes a speakers sound, that doesn't mean you will. Talk to an experienced installer/salesman and tell him/her what music you listen to and how you want your speakers to sound (punchy, warm, tight etc.) and they should be able to narrow it down for you.

One other important factor is the mounting depth of the speaker. If they wont fit even with a spacer or your not prepared to pay for the custom work, does't matter how good the speaker is, it will be useless to you.

so before buying online, i'd ask a few a shops or sk2 owners
