View Full Version : Tappets noisier after valve clearance adjust

after adjusting the valve clearance when the engine was stone cold, the car has more torque and runs smoother. however, i notice the engine has become noisier on idle. i followed the adjustments to the letter. set the intake to .20mm (.18mm - .22mm) and exhaust to .25mm (.23mm - .27mm). Also set the TDC mark to where it should be.
can someone shed some light on how did the engine become noisier? is it bad to have noisy tappets? i'm happy with the engine's performance but the idle noise kills me. it's supposed to be quieter than before but got noisier..

mums car was making tappet noises so from what i googled a few weeks ago:
it could be, not enough oil or an unsuited oil
dirty hydraulic lifters
or just incorrectly adjusted valve clearances
in the end i just got mum to take it down to the mechanics lol.
either way good luck

where did you take your clearance measurements from?

i got the measurements from the honda service manual.
if i take it to a mechanic, by the time i get there the engine will be hot. is there such like a hot measurement for the clearance?

the engine should be cold.
even the manual should tell you to adjust when its cold, my manual (haynes) tells me that i should adjust it when its cold.
when you take it to mech, they should leave your car for a while to let engine cool down.

i read somewhere.... that the valves can get "sticky" or something, and make the sound....

how exactly did you adjust them, cyl 1 TDC then you adjusted cyl 1 only ?? then cyl 3 TDC, then cyl 4 TDC, then Cyl 2 TDC ??

i've been waiting for your reply ECU-MAN :D yep that was the sequence.. 1-3-4-2. rotated the cam counterclockwise every cylinder.
this morning when i started the car, the engine idle was fine not much noise.. but when i got to work i observed again and the tappets are noisier.. hmmm i'm at lost because the car pulls harder and smoother on uphills, but the tappets got noisier when the engine temp gets hot.

my workmate said it's not the tappets it's just the normal engine sound.. he said tappets sound like "tap-tap-tap-tap-tap" rapidly.. the one i'm hearing is different and it's not rapid. i must have been paying too much attention and getting paranoid since the adjustments..lol i don't really know what a noisy tappet sounds like.. i need a second opinion..:o

andiiso you may be right.. maybe the one i'm hearing are the injectors.. if the tappets are noisy am i meant to hear them when the car is running?? because i dont hear anything apart from the exhaust and cai when the car is running.. it's actually smoother than ever.

lol yeah i did..the car has been sleeping for 12 hours when i did it.. it was dead cold.. i couldnt take it to Rob because by the time I get there the engine will be hot.. or does he have a special hot measurements?

Does it sound like this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4K3dky-zs1Y
If it does, it is the injectors, not the tappets.

ive got noisy tappets, to me its more evident when you sit at engine bay and hold the rev (any like 1-2-3k rpm) using the throttle cable, cos then u dun realli hear the exhaust as much..

Injector noise is fine. The first couple of times i did tappets i freaked cause thats what i could hear afterwards lol.

could very well be the injectors....
problem is this noise is more audible after this DIY session so it has to be relevant to the tappets being adjusted. Maybe this is simply a perception issue. Maybe having this car for soo long and any slight change in noise is very noticeable to the driver :)

second that, VERY noticeable .. lolz i recently changed every single belt in my car and waterpump n thermostat, and previously i had a overtightened cam belt and it was pigeon styles all the time lol, then as soon as i finished and turned car on .. i hear the normal engine noise and was like "OMG DID I FUK IT UP !?" :p

Yeah, it's fine. I had that in 2005, and now it is 2008 plus 5 trackdays later, the engine is still fine.

np dude, reason i had that guess was cos i did tappets on a accord and then heard more tapping sorta noise after it, which turned out to be injectors and had me stumped bad lol

That's the sound of the injectors. Same sound as in my video. If you take off the plastic cover, it gets louder. Stick a screw driver up against where the injectors go into the intake manifold and put the handle against the back of your ear. You can hear it in all its noisy glory.
