About to purchase a teg with engine and gearbox problems.
gearbox im not too worried about. that i can grab 2nd hand.
problems are this.
rough idle.
i know it can be the iacv or fitv. dizzy timing, or cam timing since he had the head done.
another one is that it wont go past 3-4000rpm. im thinking cause it has an exhaust leak either wehre the manifold is or at the end of the extractor. or the valves.
please confirm, any help is appreciated.
now the things that bothered me.
in neutral clutch depressed (disengaged)
give a small rev, it gives off a bearing sound. as if the thrust bearing on a gearbox was worn.
its like a coin rattling around in a coke can.
remember this is with no movement transfered to the gearbox.
could this be the big end bearings? crank thrust? something loose inside the engine?
and also. the lack of revs. could that be the cause of loss of compression?
please dont flame about why i would get a car that has so many problems.
i just need quick help.
any helpful responses will for sure get  +1
thanks in advance.!!
Edit: no longer need answers for my personal use. though id like the thread to be kept opened for others to use.
So please share you opinions/experiences.
thanks. =]

When the clutch is "depressed", or lifted off the floor - this means that it is engaged. If there is a "coiny" sound it could be the thrust bearing in the clutch
Im not sure if this is what you meant, but you wernt clear.

-.-" clutch pedal depressed clutch disengaged. missed out the pedal word.
but yeh no power is transfered to the box at all so the box is not spinning.
unless the clutch is grabbing.
though the car has an even worse sound wen its driving.
the coiny sound is there from 1-2000rpm .. then it stops at 3-4000 thats when the engine bogs and doesnt go any further.

well the revs wont go past that. i need to know if its happend to a teg before and if theres a fix.
i just need to know if its major thing and if itll cost heaps to fix.
theres just a massive exhaust leak.
when you rev it sounds like its the intake at WOT but its coming from the exhaust.

I wouldn't be willing to go through the headache and extra cost of potentially having to source another engine.

well yeh i have a feeling the engine was ****ed .. might i add that it didnt have engine oil to start with.. filled it up with oil but made little difference.
when you start it wen its cold it it struggles to start but that is probs the battery ..
but in that process where its about to start u hear .. clunk clunk .. then it starts
sound fine at idle except the fact that it bounces 100rpm up n down here n there .. n it stalls once it warms up.

with half tank of fuel.
engine light isnt on.
cdnt check for codes. didnt have a clip on me.
just need to know if its fixable or if i need to source out another engine.

If that is the case, then I wouldn't even wish this car on my enemy! I wouldn't buy it unless you were after a chassis.

that sound " coin in a can" is piston slap it would also explan the reving beacuse if the pistons are f*cked then there is probably things wrong with the head from being over reved....
or you could go the other way and say a sencer may be broken that is stoping the motor from makcing power at 4k and up....
btw what moter is it b16a b18b b18, etc , etc

just a suggestion,
sounds like the mechanical side is gna cost u a shite load to repair mate.
if everything is on the vehicle is good except the motor and trans, just pick up a 2nd hand motor+trans and drop it in... Shouldnt be difficult since ur in NSW. or u can source a low km one from jap land.
It'll save you the head f*ck and will prolly end up being a faster job and the same price if not cheaper compared to diagnosing and fixing the bugger... that way you'll have a spare motor and trans for little bits as well.
and that concludes my 2 cents.

yehh i didnt get the car.
mate got it.
bargained it down to 4grand lol
lowballer styles. got it towed it home.
so the problem is this so far.
the dood had the cylinder head re conditioned or something i dont know the story. was lebo (i mean no offence but you look at this car. it was a stereotype) so i dont know what hes done to it.
he found that the timing belts been shredded into pieces .. lucky he got it on time. was litterally hanging of a few wires .. wudve snapped any time.
hes puttin the timing belt on today so ill hear from him tommorow. but timing was out 1 tooth on each cam side.
hes plannin on resellin it too so yeh lol
will keep updated to post problems. could b helpful =]
