Steel wool might be risky, could possibly scratch the glass. A sharp razor blade is the go.

Actually its Turpentine

Another for razor blade - it will NOT scratch the glass.

Use a sharp blade and angle it at about 45 degrees from flat with the glass.

Seeing as this question always gets asked and people worry about scratching their glass I made this example.

Unless you use the corner of the razor against the glass with force or use an old rusty or damaged blade you won't scratch the glass.

Note: DO NOT USE THE RAZORBLADE METHOD TO CLEAN TINTED WINDOWS!

DO NOT use steel wool!

Thinners and a rag or razor blade will be sufficient.

Steel wool will kill your windscreen.

DO NOT use steel wool!

Steel wool will kill your windscreen.

Soft or non-abrasive steel wool (low grit) is ok for some uses on glass but I wouldn't use it for cleaning car windscreens. With this you need to be careful and use brand new steel wool and make sure no hard debris comes between the glass and the steel wool as it may scratch.

I assume you may be thinking of a steel-wool scourer (http://www.dkimages.com/discover/previews/874/5100408.JPG)? This sort of thing should DEFINITELY NOT BE USED!

I've used steel wool before on a window on our house. It was fine grade/grit but it didn't scratch - only used it cause i didn't have a razor blade at the time.

I would use the razor blade over the steel wool though any time. It's far more risky to use the steel wool.

Anyways, case closed - use a razor blade ;)
