brown should be fine although without seeing it hard to say, you change when its BLACK or per kms!
Haha most dipsticks dont have Full or empty, most just dots:wave:

if you dont know when it was changed last, then id recommend you change it asap. Hondas NEED regular oil changes.
Keep the oil lvl about 2mm from the top mark

dont risk it man...better off knowing its done for sure. you should also change all the other basics...coolant, spark plugs, fuel filter etc

should be a nice honey colour if it was done only a month ago...

so long as its not black then its not a problem. I'd change it so that you know when to next change it

yep... i would change it anyway so you know when it has and hasnt been done, but then i am anal perfectionist OCD freak... i wouldnt worry about it TOO much, just give it a change when you can with the correct oil...
With reference to the dots, the one higher up on the stick is the maximum, and lower is the minimum, i like to have mine as close to the top as possible

remember engine oil will turn brown/black within a short time of changing. Nothing to worry too much about and very hard to prove if its new or old !
As others have stated start afresh , and change the oil + oil filter plus all other fluids to be sure.

Agreed, I'd rather change it and be sure, than to keep guessing.

Don't fill it 2mm above the max indicator. Just fill it TO the top indicator and leave it.
Oil will eventually go dark brown/black. Some oils will darken alot faster. Some don't... I've used the same royal purple for a trackday, and 5000km's after that, and the oil is still clear. It's crazy. They said extended life... but never knew THAT much. Amazed!

I prefer an oil that turns dark quickly because that shows that it is capturing the carbon that is produced from combustion.

what you mean brown which brown the dark brown then yea you have to change it but if its like yellowish like brown kinda then its fine.

the dot near the end of the dip-stick is the minimum oil level; and the dot that is up higher toward the yellow handle is the maximum oil level,
black = bad
brown = normal
yellow = new
crap.. my oil level is like............... 5mm on top of max.. lol is that ok... vtec to burn it off? LOL or umm have to drain it back out.

DO NOT RUN THE CAR!!!! WARNING!!! high chance you can damage your internals! drain some of the extra oil out. its best the keep it a little below the upper dot.

danny like many have stated its best to change the oil and start fresh. oil filter, plugs, fuel filter, coolent and most importently oil. pick a good oil for the car. Motul is alright but over rated in my opinion. make sure you get a thin oil depending on how you run your car. when picking the oil check the viscocity of the oil after warming up. most important. in Vtec you dont really want a high viscocity oil you want a low viscocity oil to keep things smooth. talk to the reps before you buy the oil and tell them if you drive mostly on high revs or low revs and they shall assist you with the best oil for the engine.

That's fine. I have run mine 10mm above the top of max.

Disagree. My car is still fine after running from 5 to 10mm above the dot for the past 4 years.

What's all this about overfilling oil, and then you get too much crank pressure, and it causes blow by.
Never understood it... Arron?

No, blowby comes from worn piston rings. Not from overfilling. But if you have the oil level high enough that when you corner hard, the oil sloshes into the PCV line, then you extra oil being sent to the combustion chamber and burnt. That could be the explanation why people say that too much oil causes too much crank pressure (which makes no sense).
This is probably the reason why I always see B series engines give out a cloud of smoke in the right turn after the fishhook at Wakie.

Hmmm... Ok.
On the topic of oil. If oil smells quite a bit like fuel, does this mean piston rings are going? No oil burns at all, no smoke comes out of exhaust and when oil is drained, there is no fuel seperated from the oil itself.

Doubt it, because mine also smells like fuel after driving. Could just the combustion gases in the engine giving the smell to the oil.

Could running rich be the cause of that also?

mine tends to give out the smell of fuel too...i just thought it was running rich?!? could be wrong though.....:confused:

hmmmmmm.......my mates teggy ran the same way. he didnt even know it but its busted up his internals hence the reason why i gave the WARNING to RtN. :eek:

I think it was something else that caused his engine to fail.

i think it has too be...if youv run your can with oil over the dot and dint run into any drama i cant see how my mate messed up?!?!?!?!? UNLESS he used a really thick oil. cause he said it felt under powered when he took it for a spin and then he decided to full on floor it and Vtec kicked in and BANG busted engine. LOL
thanks i'll just drive to friends house bring back my jack and jack stands and take some out dont wanna risk... but yeh so far no dramas... coz i've been driving it pretty hard.. testing out new sway bar haha and even vtec'd a few times.. umm yeh safer than sorry i guess.

Seriously, don't worry about it. When I fill it 1cm above the level, I then use full throttle for the next 90 minutes in 15 minute sessions, keeping the RPM between 5000 and redline all the time. Did that 5 times and my car is still ok (changed oil after of course). Make sure you use good oil, proper viscosity (0w-30, 5w-30, 10w-30, 0w-40, 5w-40 or 10w-40), warm up before you fang it (minimum 70 C oil temp before fanging) and change the oil at regular intervals.
