i'm looking to buy a 97+ prelude. with the money i have, i can either buy a clean Si or a thrashed Vti-R
just wondering how major is the difference between the two engines? and would stock Si prelude engines have vtec? :S

No,Si is not Vtec.

Obviously it's not a good idea to buy any "thrashed" car.
If you're not worried about every last kw then an Si is fine.
Either keep looking for a better Vtir or settle with the Si.

Are you getting manual or auto?
If auto then be wary,the tiptronic autos can be a nightmare and usually play up and cost $$$

the one i'm looking at is a 98 model auto, i heard it was only the 97 models that had failed tiptronic? or does it also apply to the 98 models?

You'd have to wait for a Prelude expert to clarify that.

I wouldn't want to give possibly misleading info :)

Save up a lil bit more & get a good condition manual VTi-R, it's worth the extra $$$

Si = F series engine? 110kw tops..

Vti-R = H22a... 145kw approx....even if it was thrashed.. you'd be making more power than an Si..

Other things include 5 Stud lug pattern vs 4 stud...and thats all i know hehe

VtiR has sunroof, Si does not.
standard 15" on Si, Vtir has 16"
and the different engine.
i dont know much more.

S = F22 shitbox
Si = H23 2.3l dohc non vtec
vtir = H22 2.2l dohc vtec

based on my observations of back to back dyno graphs the H23a looks more powerful over the H22 until the H22 hits vtec and has more power and torque.

lol
how you driven this thrashed vti-r?
what's wrong with it?
did the owner actaully say it was thrashed? or does it look old and have broken panel or what?

yeah, second gear feels really weak, i smell a failed gear box

describe the 'feel'?

there are a few things that would get screwed in a gearbox that would just change the 'feel'.. usually more detrimental... you sure it's not clutch slip? revving but going nowhere?

hmm i'm not sure but every time the gear changes, theres a slight pull back? like it's slowing down, just feels slower than other preludes i've driven

so auto transmission huh?
when was the transmission fluid last changed? ><
anyways i would get a mechanic to help you.
if you test drive a car and something feels wrong then that's not good

not sure but the guy that's selling the vti-r IS a mechanic haha apparently he had to redo the engine because the previous owner screwed it up and claims he recently did a service, exhaust is welded on aswell :S its got 215000km on it

No offense, but I'd stay away from this one sounds like hes trying to exploit your lack of knowledge on ludes. How do you redo an engine? rebuild maby? if he was a mechanic he'd say it was rebuilt not had to redo it and exhaust is welded on WTF does that mean?

- the mech is implying a rebuild since the last owner "screwed it"
- a welded exhaust is exactly that, an unflanged system.

and who trusts "mechanics" anyway? theres mechanics, performance mechanics, and "mechanics". redinteg is right he sounds like a stooge but as a buyer, any smart person should know what their getting into before getting something... not knowing certain aspects about a car is poor imo at the least and is not a very 'car enthusiast' mentality... at least be smart and bring an actual 'enthusiast' with you...

i think you should do more research into 'ludes' in general as i'm pretty sure a few people have posted in the prelude section all the trouble spots already.
