- need some help guys
-- did a quick search on the forums here and saw the Throttle Body cleaning, however didn't help

- my Ek1 when idle, jumps from 1k to 2k. Use to sit on ~900rpm
- when in gear there was no problem what so ever
- when turn on A/C or fan its the same issue

* as stated
** cleaned the throttle body
** changed Engine Oil
** what else could be causing it?

Cleaned the IACV?

Is it a sudden onset problem? If so have you changed anything on the car recently?

One time fixing a broken fuse fixed a jumping idle on a friend's civic, but can't remember which fuse. It was in the under dash box.

A short in the system or a bad ground may also cause it.

i think it's called hunting or humping:S not to sure but it use to happen on my old Swift GTi, i think it could be your air flow meter or censor...

Perhaps you could check your spark plugs? And run some injector cleaner? Used to help my old car =]

does it only happen when you're not in gear?

a friend of mine who also has an EK1 had the same problem and i was advised that it could be the idle speed sensor...

brotha. take your sparkies out.
dry em out/clean em. blow air into the leads where it sits on top of the sparkies.
or change them.

i had the same thing on my teg.
during cold its worse. it jumps up and down occasionally. not constant.
sometimes it shudders when driving as well.

i changed the sparkies. and bang. problem solved.
start with the cheapest/less time consuming options first.

IACV may involve taking your manifold off. and will set you back an hour or two depending on experience.

hope it helps =]

ok new sparks
cleaned IACV

* ****en hard to crank, then finally got it going and a shit load of smoke was exhausted
(presumably all the crap that is coming out of the exhaust that was lodged in the Throttle body and IACV). Didn't get rid of all the smoke yet

had to go somewhere

* now the fbcker is barely cranking and not turning over
* think the alternator or something is low, Cause now it just cranks for a short time and dies

sigh.... dun kno what to do nex

god dam,

how could it be a thermosat if it was previously working

* or in the worst possible luck it just decided to crap itself?

There are many things that could contribute to a hunting idle unfortunately

Oxygen Sensor - Fix by replacing it

IACV - Take it off and clean the deposits inside the valve with throttle body/carby cleaner

FITV - As above, and screw the valve all the way in if the car idles too high during cold starts

Clogged Injectors - Try injecter cleaner, but the best way is to take them out and get them properly flushed out.

Throttle Body - Clean with throttle body cleaner and toothbrush/clean cloth

Thermostat - may need replacing

Fuel Quality - Try 98 octane and see what happens

Fuel Filter - Replace if old with an OEM filter

They are just some of the options :zip:

Sorry i didn't check the post earlier...but what you were describing was classic dead battery...
Cranks..then stops...or makes a bad clicking noise....

haha that's what's happening to me now... :)

Dell99
04-10-2008, 05:41 PM
yea
it was a dead battery, after charge it took a while to kick over then the smoke came

mocchi

so your hunting idle is caused by battery? or the cause of not cranking is the battery?
hmm.. i think its pretty obvious that it is the latter. but ill ask anyway lol

my civic is doing a similar thing ... it will idle around 2 1/2 grand if u hold the clutch in but when you come to a complete stop it will drop to about 1 1/2 grand but when the engine is hot the idle will drop to about 200 rpm which has me pretty confused :thumbdwn:

BUMP!!

dell99 was it your battery that was causing the idle to hunt???

Same thing is happening to mine, cant find the IACV on my d16y4 :(

Care to post a pic of where it is?
