As i've stated on the title, I was driving behind this other car, and she managed to flip a stone right on my windscreen and now it has a stone chip.. Do i have to change my entire windscreen or should i just leave it.. it's really really small but i just keep staring at it all day long.. :(:( Mum said we should claim insurance but i said not to.. so need some advise..

They can repair windscreens these days by forcing resin in the damaged area. Doesn't cost too much but it depends on how bad the damage is.

Don't keep driving it, might get a crack, then it'll run up or down your screen....get it repaired immediately if it can be repaired that is, hopefully it can.

yep as LXRY says get a windscreen repairer to have a look at it and fix it if possible. there are different methods of repair but most come to $40-80 per chip

if it can't be repaired:
- and your euro is a lux then you are up for approx $1000 to replace the screen as it has the rain sensor built in and is quite expensive from honda
(there are apparently non-gen rain sensor screens available now but i haven't used em so i'm not sure if there would be any issues there)

-if it's a standard then it's as simple as getting a windscreen specialist to replace.
price wise it depends who you get to do it but you would be looking at $150-$250 depending on the company.

also there is no point getting a honda genuine screen for a STD windscreen. the generic ones are usually just as good and half the time are made by the same people

go to O'Brien Glass,
I heard their AD on radio saying they inject some compound into the glass and fix the chip and they charge it reasonable.

Yep.

You can get little clear stickers you stick on the inside of your windscreen, behind the chip, to stop it from spreading too.

I keep a few in both of my cars. ;)

Insurance claim will cost more than the repair job.....
Unless you get free windscreen every year.

i had a chip on my car a few months ago following a car on the freeway, there is nothing you can do to avoid such a thing happening, just take it to your local windscreens obrien place, they did mine for $85.

Thanks heaps for the reply, i would say it's minor, so I hope there's no need to replace the whole windscreen.. Does anyone know any1 good in melbourne preferably S.E suburbs?

yes, go to o'brien. I had a stone chip on my windscreen as well and got it fixed through o'brien, and now hardly can be seen from outside, only visible from inside at certain angle. But it can't be too small, and it can't be too big. cost $100 I think, can't remember exactly, but not overly expensive. I can certainly recommend it.

oh, and put a cellotape on the stone chip to prevent more dust coming in/sticking on the crack surface until you get it fixed.

Had mine fixed @ Instant Windscreen. Mine was a star crack about 1cm and it looked bad and serious. They injected some stuff into it and now it looks like a dot. Barely visible. They charged me $75.

Yep, Instant Windscreen FTW. Second choice would be O'Briens.

If it's only minor then a repair should suffice.. if it's pretty big, and your windscreen has heaps of sandblasting anyway, sounds to me like a good excuse for a shiny new flawless windscreen ;)

yea it's really really minor, the crack's about 1cm and it's a straight line, hopefully getting it fixed soon..

Fix straight line cracks ASAP. They spread very quickly.

hate it when you are driving and then some semi needs to overtake a slower car..
and then all it's wheels throw bits of rocks and you hear it hitting your car..
god!!!
:thumbdwn:

just try and stay far from any car especially on dirty roads

So where's this instant windscreen place?? Googled it and came up with preston and moorabin.. is this the place you guys are talking about?

Went on o'brien website, and it states that to repair a windscreen it might cost a third of a new windscreen.. :S

They certainly do. Especially with heat cycling. Like when its really hot during the day and really cold at night.

i think you should try claim it on insurance man, otherwise i think they try and fix it using heat and sometimes you get tiny bubbles in the glass.... :S looks worse than the chip. This happened with my bros corrolla, the glass has bubbles and it just looks retarted IMO.

Heat? They would have to heat it bloody hot!!!
btw, they use glue and vacuum.

I recently wanted a minor windscreen repair in Melb southern suburbs, range National Windscreens, who put me onto Knights windscreen repairs (since Natioal no longer do repairs). When the guy from Knights saw it, he said it was too small a chip to repair, i.e., would look worse if repaired. (I only asked because it was in driver's field of view.) Anyway, I took this to be a good sign, i.e., they were honest enough not to do unnecessary work. The guy from Knights is called Noel, his number is 0418-325-852 and he'll put you onto the nearest person in your area.

Not for me.....

If only the windscreen or window glass in your vehicle is damaged as the result of an event, you will not have to pay any excess for that claim, even if an excess would otherwise apply. the cover is limited to one claim per insurance period.

Yeah, I get a free windscreen every year too. But do you really want to use it on such a tiny crack?

tron07
16-09-2008, 06:34 PM
why not?? since its free and I dont need to pay, as I had already pay for it

What happens if you crack it again next week?

I save em all up, then change!
I know it is fairly rare in the city to crack one though...

Scared? No.... live in the country. Get 1 stone chip every 4-5 trips to the big smoke.

funny, that we drove all the way to melbourne from brisbane a total return journey of 3400 kms and didnt get a chip on my windscreen, came home and soon after, a month or so, driving the 20 km journey home from work on the freeway i get this flying stone from the car in front!

it just goes to show, these things happen and its all pot luck!

Yeah, we got crap narrow country roads down south WA (up north are best in Aust...), but they are getting sooo much better. They have done most of the roads up now.
The only thing that sux with that is fresh stones to flick up...
Combine that with all the wheat grain semi's and the like, and stone chip city.

I got ~7,500kms on the CU2 now, and the front bar is a bit nicked up already.
Got 2 or 3 stone chips on the windscreen, but no cracks yet.
I mostly use my Prado for the long trips to Perth. It has a crack.

But my situation is like worst case scenario though.

I hate driving on M4, ppl never cover their loads, so much rubbish & stuff flying off and also flicking & blowing up from the ground. I had a piece of A4 size of wood got flick up and hit my screen. Lucky it didn't break, bloody scary!
