change anywhere between 3500 and 5000 for every day driving. Keep the throttle light to conserve petrol.

if you're in a rush, don't be afriad to get near redline. hondas are made to rev.

ey guys stupid qs but curious...when is it best to change gears on an itr ??
i change as is 0-20 1st gear, 20-40 2nd gear, 40-60 3rd gear etc

all comments much aprreciatedd.


depends on what your trying to achieve.
Better fuel economy - about 3-3.5k
Best speed - pretty much redline

if i drive like a granny or car isnt up to temp i dont rev over 2k rpm unless im on highway with 100km limit.

I think the manual states what revs you should shift for best fuel economy, if that is what you are after.

a mate once told me a type R engine has to revved till 9000 if not your engine will get fat and sluggish due to lack of exercise.

i heard from some1, that all cars are different, and that u arent meant to redline it when racing some 1 LOL, like each car model has a specific sweet spot to change the gear.

the best info here...and it seems to be ignored.

read your manual. not 100% for itrs, but for civics, there is an 'optimal' shift point according to the manufacturer.

but really shifting depends on many factors:
car load
incline of road
traffic conditions
amount of money in your wallet for petrol
your tardiness
how you feel
whether there is a copper around the corner
etc.

IMO, on the race track, you'd shift to the next highest gear when you feel the acceleration begin to diminish, i.e. when the rpm reaches a point where the motor starts to produce less power (because it can't 'breathe' well enough past that point).

At least this is what you'd do until you get used to it. Ideally you'd shift at or just before the point where the power band starts to tip over, rather than than when you can actually feel it start to happen. With practice you just get to know at what rpm this is, and you generally pick it by ear.

change according to the road conditions
if you don't need more acceleration then shift...
generally keep the revs low to save fuel but don't shift too early otherwise your engine will labour in the next gear...
eg.
shift at 3000rpm and the next gear will be like 2000rpm which is okay
shift at 2000rpm and your revs will drops to around 1000rpm which is no good...your car will shudder and struggle to accelerate...

so once you know your car shifting should be natural...you shouldn't have to look at the tacho most of the time when you are cruising...

rev till whenever you like. i tried driving and shifting into 5th gear at 60km/h for everyday driving
and then drove shifting at 2nd gear at 60km/h and fuel consumption diff was hardly noticeable.. felt heaps better to drive and get better response at higher rpm

all in throttle control me reckons

I beleive in racing you gotta change in such a way that it hits peak torque on the next gear. For Vtec, it means you gotta hit 5500 rpm everytime you change up.
