STI without a doubt, here are some specs;
jdm dc2r
power: 145kw
torque: 176 nm
0-100: 6.2
¼ mile: 15 sec car
weight: 1,067
WRX Sti
power: 195kw
torque: 343nm
0-100: 5.4s
1/4 mile: 14 sec car
weight: 1495kg
The STI is the better car, but it comes at a price. Unless your friend can afford the insurance, he's better off buying a dc2r

DC2r is around 18-20k... also tell you friend that the only differance between a AUDM and JDM is the front end.
STi... what year model is he after? Because that'll be between 25-40k.
If I was in the boat to pick between the 2 I would be going for the STi handsdown... I would even look into a EVO or maybe even a Audi S3 or S4.

3 members of my family are wrx drivers and believe me they can be VERY quick with some easy mods. even stock they are quick.
as stated they are 2 very different cars, driving a dc2r isnt about being the most powerful or having the quickest 1/4 mile time, its about the integration of driver, car and road. As a driveing purist its hard to go past a Type R.
on the other hand the STi's are rally machines and benefit from AWD and turbocharging.
in the end it depends on what he wants his 'project' car to do, if he wants it be mentally quick then go the STi, if he's after something less tangible, go the Type R...

ive heard of lots transfer cases g/box going pop from excessive hard driving.. i like hondas better there more unique and sooo much cheaper to mod...
its like my teg and my old supra i loved my supra and i loved rwd and powersliding etc. but the teg sooo much easier to modify, cheaper to run, insurance etc. except now with the turbo on it...
there two diff types of cars and its hard for us guys to choose but i would assume if i had the money i wouldnt b playin with cheap tegs and b buyin a powerhouse forsure its got way better foundations 4wd turbo boxer engine etc.
plus the age aswell if he lookin at like a 04 and whatever a dc2 is.... no offence but ur more likely to get a clean nice unmodded wrx and know its reliable... then get a dc2r jdm spec because u know some johnny tran has been flogging the balls out of it
know what im sayin???

DC2r is around 18-20k... also tell you friend that the only differance between a AUDM and JDM is the front end.
incorrect.
jdm has slightly more power giving out 149kw at the fly, where the audm is 141kw
facelifted jdm model comes with HIDs, no AUDM model comes with HIDs from factory
prefacelifted jdm comes with prefacelifted rear bar, 4x114.3 wheels, no airbags, smaller brakes compared to audm, which has facelifted rear bar, 5x114.3 wheels, airbags, bigger brakes, also the audm front end
facelifted jdm model comes with 16's and SS 4-1 header vs audm's 15 inch rims 4-2-1
different cluster
so there are more differences than "just" the front end

As stated above its really apples vs oranges! i have had a dc2r and currently driving a evo 6. whilst the evo is quicker straight line, i found the dc2r more fun to drive..........so really depends on the individual and what they require from the car. Only your friend can make that descion
