OK so I have a B16A in a Delsol CRX. The engine is fine, and runs smooth (good compression, doesnt chew oil etc).
So I am getting a very annoying whining noise that my mechanic believes is a bearing. So we changed the timing belt, bearing and water pump. No luck. Changed all belts. No luck. Changed the alternator. No luck.
So the only thing we can think of is the clutch bearing. What I need to know is, is there anything else we can check?
The noise occurs at idle and reduces then disappears under power. Anyone else seen this issue? We have already spent a heap on this issue to get it fixed, let alone the hours and hours of work our mechanic has done on it.

my civic has the same problem. is it worse first thing in the morning when your car is cold??
if so then you then your suspicions are correct, it is the clutch 'thrower' bearing.
it is a common problem and unfortunately the solution is not all that easy, hence why it is so common. it cannot be fixed, it has to be replaced which it quite expensive and time consuming as the gearbox has to be pulled out, and given the nature of the part even then its still sometimes not perfect.
my mate bit the bullet and had his replaced and was devoed when his civic was still a bit noisy when cold at idle.
hopefully this helps you clarify yur problem
all the best.

rather than paying for something that it might be, why doesn't your mechanic put a stethoscope on the engine to actually locate the part of the engine the sound is coming from, rather than guessing what maybe wrong.
If you have done all the above, and still have the issue i would not be paying for any of it

I'd be getting a stethoscope or at least a long screwdriver (putting the handle end on your ear and putting the tip of the screwdriver onto various parts of the engine) to emphasize the sound and determine more precisely, the area where the noise is coming from (the belt side of the motor, dizzy area, gearbox etc).
I know the bearing on my distributor (B16A2) is on its way out. Get's a little 'rattly' when cold some mornings and my heat-sheild on my exhaust works itself loose (need to loctite it one day) and makes a rattling/buzzing noise sometimes but these issues are just some of many possibilities.
On honda25's post: Does the noise get change when you engage/disengage the clutch? If it doesn't change i'd be pretty sure the noise is not your release/throw-out bearing.
Try and determine the area the noise is coming from, otherwise it's really just a guessing game.

The main issue is that it doesnt happen all the time. Like you turn the engine off and it will stop. It comes and goes, so going around with a stethoscope wouldn't have worked.
Its like a high pitched squealing sound.
Thanks for the advice so far. At least its not just me!
