Hi All,

I have a 92 LS Integra, and ive been experiencing some problems when starting my car.

Ive noticed that this occurs predomintly during the hotter months of the year.

Basically, when i leave work at the end of the day and my car has been in the sun all day. When i start the engine, the car starts as per normal and the rev gauge indicator goes up as per normal, then soon as soon the rev indicator is normal ie helfway, the rev gauge goes down and the car stops running.

When i try and start the car again, the engine will not start. The ignition will start, and engine is trying to start but wont get that spark.

My only solution is to wait for around 15-30mins with all the windows open (to cool the car down ???) press down the accelerator and turn on the ignition.

Again, this problem only happens on hotter days, where the car has been in the sun.

Im not sure where the problem might be, ive spoken to some rev heads at work and they pretty much say, it could be the fuel lines or startar motor or spark plugs.

Im guessing that the problem might be with the fuel lines, as when the car does eventually start, i can smell petrol in the air -- not sure becuase i rev'd the S*** out of it.

Any ideas???

Either way, depending what the problem might be i will take my car to the mechanics next month to investigate.

as above
sometimes giving it a bit of a bashing works too

Take the cover off and squeeze the two relays together. Worked for me before I re-soldered mine - had two intermittent ones, now have two that work perfectly, every time.

did u just re-solder the circuit board?

Yep. Just re-flowed all connections; adding some more solder where it looked a little light. Bit of a rip-off for new ones - If mine ever die for good I'll replace the whole lot with a simple switch.

interesting!

i googled 'pgmfi main relay' and came across these informative sites:

--http://www.marklamond.co.uk/tech-honda/pgm-fi/main-relay/main-relay.htm

interestingly enough, this looks like what might be causing the problem.

Heres an extract from the 2nd site listed above
'Problems starting the car, usually after a short run (when the interior is warm), though in bad cases the car may fail to start at any time. A classic time for the problem to occur is at the petrol station, or if you park for a minute to get something from a shop. If the car is parked for a long period, the interior usually has cooled enough for the joint to make contact again, and you won't notice a problem'

'The engine will usually fire, run for a split second and then stall, as the remaining fuel under pressure is used up'

Might give the a fix a go, but i would like to buy one just in case i stuff it up.

Anyone know where i can buy new ones from?
if i cant, then looks like a trip to the honda wreckers is on the agenda.

Hi all, ill give you guys an update.

after reading many pages how this relay thing works .eg first click, petrol is sent to the engine for 2 sec, next click, petrol is sent to engine for 5 seconds etc.

with this in mind, during the week, when i had the same problem. i did not have to wait for 15mins etc for a cool down.

i just kept repeating the 'clicks via the iginition' part (repeated 3 times) and the next time i started the car up the car nearly started, then i tried the clicks again (5-6 times) and the car started.

which brings up another question. is this a symptom of the pgmfi main relay or just my fuel lines need checking?

thanks in advance.

It's your relay. Resolder it or buy a new one (depending on your budget and skill level) and the problem will disappear.

Hi all,

Car is sweet now.
Took my car to Astoria Honda, told them the issue. They basically replaced the main relay with a brand new one.

$120 (part) + $30 (labor) = $150.

They also washed my car :).

cheers.

PS. Thankyou to everyone who inputted their 2 cents to my car problem.

Glad you got it fixed. You should have bought a $30 soldering iron instead though :)
