ignition timing procedure clarification

okay so my usual routine is as follows:
1. loosen 3 dizzy bolts
2. jump scs connector
3. start car, let it idle until operating temp and correct idle speed
4. hook up timing gun to plug#1 cable and hook up power
5. adjust timing to desired amount
6. tighten top dizzy bolt, recheck timing
7. turn off car, remove scs jumper
8. tighten remaining dizzy bolts
9. start up the car without scs jumped and recheck timing

reason why i'm questioning my technique is that people always mention that you have to jump the scs connector but never really say whether to do it with the car already running or before even starting the car
same goes for removing it, with or without engine running?

you can jum the SCS at any time, just make suer your checking and making adjustments with it shorted.

I tighten all three dizzy bolts and recheck the timing
