EG civic blown engine

Hey guys, I bought a 1993 civic GL a few weeks ago for $2650 (I thought it was cheap too)

When I was driving into the carpark a week or so ago I heard a loud bang and my battery light came on, I also lost my power steering, as the person who sold the car to me said the fan belt was loose I beleived it to be the fanbelt coming off. So I decided to take it to the mechanics. (second time in two weeks btw, the heater hose blew 3 days after I bought the damn thing ._.)
After a few hours the mechanic rang and gave me the wonderful *insert sarcasm* news, that the whole engine needed replacing. woo.

The previous owner had managed to thread the pulley that the fan belt runs off of (dont know what it is called specifically). Whats more is the pulley had been bolted ... with a nut and bolt through the center of the pulley.. to the engine, this bolt had snapped off and broken something (I forget what).
so now we need a new engine.

I was planning on doing a conversion at one point with the car however after reading up on it in some states a 50% power increase is classed as a performance modification which is not allowed for someone on their P plates.
So back to a d15b7 we go.

Since I will be on my Ps for another 18 months or so, I was planning on throwing some cash into other parts of the car. I have written this thread to ask if anyone could help me decide as to what suspension, exhaust etc. etc. to buy. Money isn't reallllyyy a problem, I can just save for a while, perferably a $1-1.5k limit on each thing e.g. $1000 suspension, $1500 exhaust etc.

if u were planning to do a conversion. Do it once, go b16a. Its a 100cc increase thus u dnt need a engineers. If u really jus wanna do sussy. I would just do a koni n king spring combo. Or bc coilies. Best buy

I suggest putting in a different engine. I think the D15 is a bit gutless, and even though the D16Y1 isn't a whole lot tougher I'd still say it's a better option.

If you're prepared to spend $1.5k on the exhaust alone then the other alternative might be to do a B16A swap or something. A D16A would be a nice strong choice but then it's too old :(


I like Koni Yellow adjustables for suspension, not sure about exhaust though maybe you could just go to a performance shop and get them to mandrel-bend a setup for you.


But firstly do the engine, and maybe go tougher than the D15 :)

I'm planning to do a k20a conversion when I get off my Ps.

the reason I was thinking of a d15b7 is that I still have all of the running gear for one, is the gear the same for other D series engines? could I put in a V-TEC engine (say a D15z or a D16y) with non v-tec gear?

I had things such as interior mods in mind, like bucket seats (maybe?) short shifter (can these be taken out and re-applied to a new gearbox if I do a k20 conversion?) new cluster, steering wheel. And with exhausts, if I buy an N1 muffler can I cut it off and re-attach it if need be. Like if I go Forced induction and want a bigger pipe down the line?

I have read a little on koni yellow suspension, not much as I only thought a lot about suspension this morning.

If I sound like I know exactly what I want, I apologise because I really dont :o This is just ideas going off of a few months research.

Yeah in the hills in SA near blackwood, are you in SA too?

You have a EG GL - which is a carbied 1.5 SOHC. To put a EFI engine in (any other 1.5 or 1.6 + D series etc) you will require to convert your wiring and fuel supply to EFI. This adds significant cost to your project BUT opens up your options to D , B H and K etc.

First , i would consider simply replacing your engine with another of teh same - cheapest option and then modify your suspension to a degree to learn about how your car can handle. After you have your ps for abit or even get off them , you should of saved up enough to do the EFI conversion and hopefully of found a B series motor. That makes your car a bunch of fun :)

Dont bother with another D series EFI engine. They are great replacement engines but ultimately are dead end motors with little power and lack of support to do anything really special. Save up and get a B series

Agreed. Go to B series though man. K series wiring and shit is so damned expensive. You could do a B series and enough mods to make it compete with a K series by using the same cash but probably more fun :)

Yeah, the EFI conversion cost was sitting in the back of my mind. seeing as I pretty much emptied my pockets to buy the car wheich is now worth as much as a dented rolling shell I doubted I would be able to afford a conversion and an engine without considerable time off of the road.

Does anyone think that going through a wreckers would be a better idea than a company, mechanics believe that wreckers would charge less to install if I bought through them.(the company I am thinking about going through is city dismantlers, however I have heard that they may milk me for all of my money)

agreed! ecu man will be the few of honda specialists in SA, cheap, best, quickest job done~heard form other memeber dan as ecuman convert the whole DC2R engine, gearbox, brake everything in a ek1 to become a ek9 in 2 days! unbelievable skill!
