Coolant hoses, which would you do and why?

I was having a lengthy debate with my good friend and we would like to know the opinion of the general public......

When installing coolant hoses, heater hoses, anything that runs coolant. How would you slip the hose onto the inlet?

1 - would you use a general purpose grease or any other grease to ease the sliding on and prevent rust........
2 - would you use some sort of silicone gasket maker to seal better......
3 - nothing at all, just shove it on without applying anything......
4 - other, please explain what and why.....

3 - Nothing at all.

No need to use grease. It all slips on easy enough. Some coolant that may be still on the fittings will help with slipping on. You shouldn't be 'preventing rust' if your using coolant and not just plain water.

No need for any sealant. Good hose, good surface as long as its not coroded will seal fine with a good clamp. I'd see using any sealant as a band aid fix.

depends on how bad of condition your hoses are too

Clean up the barbs with some wet and dry and you're good to go. Make sure the clamp is on the right spot and you'll never get coolant seeping by to cause corrosion - it's a relatively low pressure system afterall.

3. try to slip it on without any grease or lube
but if your not getting anywhere because the hose and the inlet are say both 2'' then i would use abit of vaseline on the inlet to help it slide on. then tighten with hose clamp

Well, I always grease my stuff, just my preference.

Dremal with wire wheel on the corroded inlets, because i don't have a drill.& wire wheel.

Thanks to those that have posted, I just wanted to see what others would do.

if your having alot of problems, run the hose thru hot water to soften it up abit before slipping it on, but don't use any lubs as you will contaminate the coolant.
