EG3/B18 conversion using smashed 94 Integra donor - HELP NEEDED

Hi guys,

Newbie here - both to the forum and to Hondas.

I've searched on here and read a few threads about engine conversion, but looking for some more specific advice. Sorry if I'm asking for something that's already here - if anyone can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate the help.

A mate and I have just brought a 92 EG3 with the original motor still in. We know it's not the best base for a conversion, but the car is basically straight, intact and we brought it for well under a grand. We are also have the skills and experience to do the paint and re-trimming ourselves.

We have the opportunity to buy (at a good price) a complete, but smashed, 1994 Integra with a recently rebuilt b18C in it. We figure that buying the whole wreck we should be able to lift most of what we need from the donor car with the engine - would we be correct in this assumption, or would we still need to raid another Civic?

We're wanting to do our research and our homework before we commit to anything and would appreciate help with any "how to" guides about this specific conversion, advice, comments etc. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

EG3 is carby so any upgrades you do will include conversion to EFI. You can do this one of two ways:

1. Buy a complete harness (boot, cabin, dash and engine bay) from a VTEC Civic like the EG5, and graft the engine loom from the B18 onto it. Easily done as both are VTEC.

2. Try and splice the B18 harness onto the existing harness - difficult at best and probably not advisable.

Make sure you get the computer. I'm not up on my B18VTECs but if its OBD1 you're laughing; if its OBDII then you have some more work to do. A conversion harness would be the best way to go.

You'll need the fuel tank and fuel pump as well from the EG5.

Either way you will need to find two FSMs (Factory Workshop Manuals) - one for the Civic (preferably EG5) and one for the Integra with B18. These are not too hard to find on the net. Quick search through some OS Honda Forums should locate them for you.

I also recommend rear disk brake conversion, and master cylinder/booster upgrade. Use the units from the Integra.

You're on the right track. Wreck is infinitely better than trying to buy mish-mash parts from a wide number of sellers.

So, if you haven't actually bought the Civic my advice would be to look out for an EG5 as the base - same shape etc just already got VTEC.

You'll also need some engine mounts. B Series mounts for the EG are easy to find or you can go aftermarket.

You could also splash a little cash and re-bush all your suspension, steering and arms, from the US. Kits like Energy Suspension Master Bushing Kits are cheap and freight is about $50. This will give you everything to replace those tired OEM bushes.

We've committed to the EG3 - but not to the Integra. The EG3 - for what we paid for it - was too good to pass up. If nothing else we figured we'd paint it and give it a good tidy up, leave the 1.3 in and flog it off for someone's first car/runnabout. We'd get our costs back on it doing this.

I'm going to ask another stupid question. We also have access to a smashed 92 1.6 sedan (totally original) from which we can raid a few parts. We really only wanted headrests off it originally (the ones in the EG we bought are broken - typical 3 door with people using the headrests as grab handles to get out of the back seat) - but will the fuel tank and fuel pump from this be any good? I'm guessing the tank will be a different shape, but figured it couldn't hurt to ask the question.

i did my conversion with my EG3 4 years ago.

almost everything can be used from the DC2 except the radiator unless u cut the weld brackets.
even the dash and brakes can be used as well, and lots of shops wont tell u that so they can take the brakes from you and sell them to someone else.

other things you need is fuel line, fuel tank and the wiring harness from EG5.
i was told you dont need the whole fuel line, the only difference is the fitting at the end.

and get the cluster from EG other than EG3, as EG3 cluster doent have rev meter.

then you are set to go.
outcome is awesome as EG3 is lighter than other EG, and has less sound deadening under the carpet.

1.3L makes it the poor man's Civic - the Breeze, introduced by Honda to try and bolster sales of the Civic EG, which many regarded as too costly for the average person to afford. Still a quality chassis but with all the bells & whistles removed.

Civic 1.6 will be the D Series twin cam - D16AX, still fuel injected, so yes, you can use the fuel tank. I'm pretty sure the fuel tank will be OK (and the pump) but you may want to check as the point of entry for the fuel filler might be different and that may makes it unusable. But that still leaves you with the wiring to sort out as the twin cam is Non-VTEC.

i once sold a dc2 fuel tank to a guy who wants to do efi conversion in his eg
he said it didnt fit so i refunded the $20 and let him keep the tank.

fuel pump is interchangeable but fuel tank is in gray area.
net say it fits, some say doesnt so idk.

You can use the fuel tank from the DC2 and/or the EG Sedan you've got. Most of these fuel tanks are secured under there with 2 straps and a locking tab - that's it - So if you can secure it between the straps - you're good to go. Fuel pump is no problem - so as long as you bring the entire loom across from the DC2, they should be very similar if not the same.

Fuel lines - just use the standard hard lines that came with the EG3 - Cut the ends off from the donor cars and use some fuel grade hoses with hose clamps - works wonders and saves you ALOT of time (and money in respect to being able to find just the lines from a EFI model). If my memory serves me right, you only need to cut 2 lines - the feed and the return and hook it up to the hard fuel lines. Make sure you mark it before you remove ur carby fuel tank - but if you do get confused, I'll check mine for ya. Oh and they are both 2 different sized hoses - again I don't think I remember but I can check for you if need be - won't cost you more than $10 in total from Clark rubber or the likes.

Everything from SEATS/DASH from the DC2 will bolt right up to ur EG3 - as the chassis are the same. Engine mounts from the DC2 can be used to secure the motor as well, as when I was planning to do this - this was what I have been told by a mate who has done it before.
