Speakers vs Subs

Hi, I just bought a car and am going to do up the sound system. I was wondering what would be the best setup. I have a Pioneer DEH-P1Y headunit and now need the other part of the setup. I'm into bass, but not to the extent of major subs like my friends. As long as the bass is strong but not heard from the other suburd is fine with me.
I was thinking of either:

A speaker setup (6.5" 260w in the front + tweeters, and 6x9's 390w in the back, these are infinity kappa series speakers). I was thinking this as my stock speakers aren't that great and seem to rattle every now and then, and I heard that good custom speakers give off really good sound and decent bass. This'll cost me like $600 for both speaker sets. Basically I want to know if speakers give off decent bass? Not like crazy sub bass, but noticable bass.

A question I got about this is, do I need to buy an amp to power the speakers bass? Cause im not sure if my headunit can provide the maximum amount of bass. (I dont have much knowledge on this issue).

Or....

Just one 12" 1000w JBL sub in the back (in box) and a decent amp to power it. My friend has this and it sounds pretty good, but his stock speakers are awesome (hes got a 2004 holden astra) so im not sure what to do. This'll cost me about $650.

if you're not into bass that much do the speakers for sure. initially i just replaced my 6x9s to start with and it sounded pretty good. But definately if you arent that into the heavy bass do the speakers, youll love the result. and if not, you can always get a sub later? i dont know why but to me i think installing a sub later is easier than installing speakers later. Dont ask why, just is.

Well a good set of 6x9 can give you really good sound. But you will still need to run a amp. A friend of mine had 6x9 200watts in his car and running on a small amp and it does the job........

If your aiming for nice good sound just change your front and rear speakers and run them off a 4 channel amp...

If you like bass, don't bother with rear speakers of any sort, they're just there for your back seat passengers and who really cares about them anyway :)

Get some splits up front powered by the head unit and a single sub in your boot powered by a small 2 channel amp bridged to run as one channel (6 1/2 splits match very nicely with a 12 inch sub in a sealed enclosure). It will have much more impact than a system with splits and 6x9s (personally, i think 6x9s are massively overrated) especially in the bass department and you won't have to crank it all the way up to feel your music since having a sub makes the music seem louder overall.

Also, don't bother with all this brand name crap for the amp and sub, Jaycar's Response gear is very good and well suited to you're purpose. You would be able to get the amp and sub from there for approx $325 then spend bout another $75 on parts to install it and some beer to get your mates to help.. and roberts your fathers brother, instant bass :D

go amp ur speakers if u want better sound but get amp and sub if u want bass...

the P1Y will do good with the 60W output but if u want doof, then u ought to go a sub ;)

how much you have to spend??? cause price wise matters!!! espeacially when you want quialty sounds!!!

maybe instead of getting 6x9s think of investing in some 7x10s

hmmmm...... think a decent setup of one 12" and a good pair of splits will do the job. Good RCA a also one factor that can contribute to good quality sound

If your looking for 6x9's im semi-thinking of selling mine. :thumbsup:

a decent set of 6''/6.5 splits amped in the front, 6x9 in the rear (dont worry about amping these, decent amped splits will do fine if your tight on the green stuff) and a decent sub. 1000w sounds impressive on paper but check out J.L subs there W3 range is primo. they use bugger all RMS yet punch the cleanest bass.

If you're gonna just go with a speaker set up I'd recommend Kenwood HQ 7 X 10, ~$240 from shop at bankstown, not sure if I can name shops but PM me and I'll send you the link to the site. Don't bother with 6X9's.

You'll need an amp to power these btw, I think they want 150w RMS cant remem, just check on the kenwood website, but u wont be disappointed with them.

thanks for the info guys. I'm now thinking of buying just splits in the front and putting a 12" sub in the back. How should I link the amp to get the best possible sound, as in, hook the amp the the splits and sub, and the rear speakers to the headset, or all the speakers to the headset and sub to amp? or all speakers + sub to amp?
