main and rod Bearings

OK ...
Ive research like for the past 2 days..

For main bearings i use the Block letters and crank numbers
for rod bearings i use the crank letters and rod numbers


That means i would have like 1 color per complete bearing? however from factory they are mismatched?


eg... my piston 1 rod bearing is green and rod cap bearing is brown..

Doesnt this jsut put the whole helm concept out of wack? what am i doing wrong?

you can mix and match bearing caps to get your desired clearance.

do u plastigauge and stuff everytime u build?

i wonder if mechanics plastigauage and measure for clearences on a rebuild..

you MUST plastiguage every time,

hey man, always always use plastigauge... do the test several times and make sure it is PERFECT.

this is probably one of the most paticular steps of a good honda engine build - do it right and you will have a great base to work off.


the rod cap bearings will vary from rod to rod as will the crank bearings - this is fine. just make sure the top and bottom half of the bearings are both the same colour for any one whole bearing (thats what ive always been told anyway!!)

the numbers and letters from the locations on the engine will give you hondas factory bearing colour code - you should plastigauge the bearings already in the engine to give you an idea of what gaps are there and what bearings to test/buy.
most of the time if the crank has not been ground and linnished then you can get away with factory honda bearing colours - but you must always test them to check.

if i told u the amount of big workshops that use these youll freak.

some of the fastest hondas in OZ use acl race bearings

Not true... I toook apart my OEM engine.. the rod and rod-cap bearing are a different color.. :(... makes everything more confusing

True... however ACL only make 3 sizes of bearing... honda makes 5..

So they might not neccessarily have the right size

correct. they make std and two oversized sizes

Honda Bearing color to thickness chart

When I opened up my engine I had 3 green, 4 brown and 1 black rod bearings and Honda didn't have any Brown and Black bearings in stock (at least 1 month ETA). So I end up using all green bearings when I rebuild the engine because the difference between each colour is only 0.003mm. It'll be fine as long as you mic everything to make sure they are within the clearance limit.

Bearings too tight = higher chance of spinning a bearing
Bearings too loose = you'll lose oil pressure.
