Upgrading CAI types n opinions

heys guys,
i was just wandering your opinions about upgrading the air flow/CAI/SRI to a car.. I wanted to see if there is a difference if i change my pod filter to a blitz or apexi filter n whether it will fit with my piping n make it louder/better performance.

im currently running a JS racing carbon filter air intake and guys i have to recommend it to ya! ITS amazing.. nice noise and good responce.

my main purpose of this upgrade is:
- better air flow
- abit louder

dont know if getting a muffler will be a better option.

please.. opinions welcome.

Are you asking about changing from a SRI to an CAI?
I was gonna get JS Racing intake but I learnt they are prone to heat soak...

I'm running an Injen CAI and it's loud as hell. No power improvement over stock and a very slight throttle repsonse lift. I'm considering J's Racing and Gruppe M intakes for my DC5. I'd like to find a review that compared CAIs to these 2 brands and the Mugen intake.

for me i was thinking of just replacing the a blitz pod filter with the stock one i have now with my js racing.

do u think that will make it louder n better performance?

Filters by themselves will not do much might get a slightly different sound but performance wise im pretty sure it would do jack.

If you want loud you have a few choices.
- CAI goes to your front bumper and hella loud (think it must be the loudest of the intakes or on par with the j's racing whale penis)
- Get a exhaust no resonators or minimal resonators with hi flow cat
- Or if your gangsta....lol. Straight thru exhaust (no cat) (highly illegal and dont reccomend it but does sound good and know a few ppl who are doing it.)

PS. If your changing the stock one from the stock standard airbox i doubt you would get any changes at all. And if your taking the lid of the airbox to make VTEC kick in really loud (i know cause we have all done it) you actually lose power. Your butt dyno says YES but the real verdict is NO. lol.

PPS. To answer your question No a new filter will not give you a reasonable performance gain (but it is good to keep clean filters). A muffler will not give you performance gains only a nicer sound. A 2.5" full exhaust will give you the gains and sound i think your looking for.

i hav the whale penis =) but thinking of replacing my pod filter since its 1 year old alreadi and thats why i was seeing if there is a difference between wat pod filters i get.

ur 2nd option with exhaust n high flow cat costs $$

haha and my friend told me abt the no cat option - taking it out. cheapest but risky

maybe the way out is a 2.5" exhaust. thanks for that.

never heard of an injen cai not providing any gains :S:S

I agree with Macoman about the pod filter thing.

i would say yeah your current CAI as long as its collecting air out of the stream of the radiator is good and an investment in good quality pod type air filter like the names you mentioned to keep intake air clean and give of that nice induction noise. May save you time and money and plus if you can make the location of the pod hidden so the men in Blue dont see it and defect you.

CAI would be better as cold air burns better than hot air and also when considering effects of heat soak.But then when the car is doing 50km/h + is there going to be much heat soak actin on the air flow rushing through the intake to really make a difference that you would notice in performance wtih a stock na.

And in my opinion at idle heat will transfer though any shiny metal CAI and your inlet manifold un less your CAI has some sought of effiecient heat sheilding around it.

A Testimonal on the INJEN website talks about economy but then how reliable is the tests these customers doing on the MPG or Litres/100K test.

And then the better of Manufacturer's out there spend time researching engine design for performance and economy to a degree, caus an economical car will sell better than a guzzler. And be more enviro friendly..... like some turbo imports with boost controllers:)


I was once told by a wise man that pod filters wont nessacarily give a performance increase that you would ever notice if fitted to a stock na motor as to do with the volumetric efficiency limited by the design of the motor as most na motors rarely go over 90 % VE.At the end of the day with a good motor, good air filter .The cylinder is only gonna take in so much air as designed.

If you had some cam work and an exhaust a pod filter could help, and even some head work with port n polishto imrove the whole in and out flow.Probably then you would notice difference with or with out pod filters.

So would be good to atleast ensure you have a good air filter that cleans the air going well and provides minimal restrictions to air flow say like a K&N as they have been known for ,or like your well known brands.On the other hand you could just remove airfilter for better flow and have just piping to collect air ,but then you get oil contamination and other probs.

This is my opinion and if some one thinks it needs corecting.please say so nicely no need to be coarse about it I can respect others opinions.

Ppl with racecar experience would prob have the best knowlege on this subject too.

I'm curious now. Is it worth changing my CAI for a J's Racing or Mugen intake if car is only going to be used for track use since that seems to improve throttle response?

I just wish we have an automotive engineer around here to explain all these things. I did Mechatronic Engineering and have not much clue bout cars except everythin I've learnt from books and magazines.

Personally I'm gonna get the mugen air box as the c-west front bumper should provide that extra flow of air into the box.
