How can you tell if its the clutch release bearing or gearbox input bearing.
the noise is only present when moving, and dissappears when you put your foot on the clutch,
when stationary there is no noise, clutch in or out

I don't think you kinda can without taking it out to see what is wrong :(
ISB in the gearbox
if you drive and the knocking gets faster and louder its input shaft, it happened to mine, if you stopped and press clutch, the knocking noise goes away, if u take foot off clutch noise is there
and like i mentioned as you drive the noise will get faster and louder....that is ISB (gearbox bearing)
is it costly to fix the GB bearing?
and does it cause any problems that the sound?
As mentioned above Your issue sounds like the ISB (input shaft bearing) and is common with manual gearboxes with higher ks or more wear. At a guess you are looking at about $600 all up at a workshop incl. labour and parts to fix it.
The "noise" is metal on metal contact , and is essentially the bearing wearing out. So eventually it will fail. Dont leave it much longer get it fixed
i got quoted 1700 for a full recondition as i also have this problem... but u say 600?

That is , IF it is only the ISB. A full reco should include all main bearings and possibly new synchros etc.
BTW DIY guys including myself can do it alot cheaper here but this isnt about that. This is about what this guys issue is and what he is looking at.
yeh but i BELIVE i have the same problem, i was told it was my gearbox bearings, anyway benn u have pm :)
yeh i thought it was my wheel bearing..
i got them fixed..
still had the sound...
so the mech said it was the gearbox bearing..
same deal den?
i had myine rebuilt, i cange all the bearings on each shaft and the 2 diff bearings and good as new, my mechanic (forman at honda) rebuilt it at home, parts and labour all up $1100, my price............
