problem with brake

heya

only recently ive got this little annoying probelm when braking.. Braking while moving over 5km/hr is all good and fine, but once it slows down to a halt i hear this springy sound, followed by like a explusion of air (kinda subtle) and then when i press down its kind of like a grindy sound!!

however sometimes when i go over like a bump on the road my ABS lights up on the hud, and i dont get the problem anymore when braking to a stop its all fine.. the ABS light will stay on untill i turn the car off..

any ideas??

stuffed abs sensor? do an ecu check or manually check whether the abs sensors on the wheels are damaged

sorry im a bit of a newb :) how would i go about doing an ecu chec?

Its not that hard to diagnose & fix certain ABS faults over the internet.

Its also better to go to said specialist armed with a little bit of knowledge about the fault beforehand,to save time,labour,money & the possibility of getting ripped off.

OP,look under your glovebox area till u find a blue 2 pin plug(it will most likely have a brown wire & a black wire connected to it),the plug will not be connected to anything but most likely clipped into just a green holder.

Get a paperclip or something similar & put one end in each hole of the plug to "short" it out.In other words ur trying to join the 2 wires in the plug together by using the paperclip.

Then turn your ignition key on (all lights come up on dash),and watch the ABS light to see if it flashes any fault codes at u.Note whether they are long or short flashes,how many flashes & any pauses in between & for how long.
Then post results back here & someone will tell u what to do next.

it'll either tell you which sensor is stuffed or all of them are in which you'll have to look at them individually to see if they're broken(mine told me they were all busted, turned out to only be the front passenger, replaced the sensor and no more error code :))

however will the ecu ALWAYS be on the passanger side? because i had a very long hard look under the glove box, and cant seem to find the green connector holder let alone a 2 pin connector anywhere...

ahh nevermind i found it on the drivers side, these were my results
I = long blip
- = short blip

I - - 12
I I I I I - - - - 54
I I I I I I - 61

it was the ABS light that was flashing aswell, is this unsual?

from the codes given it would also explain this only recent rattling pinging sound comming from the bonnet/engine sometimes when i accelerate or let go of the accelator.... any ideas ??:eek:

12 Short circuit in right hand front wheel speed sensor
54 Inoperative relay
61 Low supply voltage

they arent to do with the abs but...

Ok krzy,your next step is to erase the codes & see what repeats itself,I'd say u'll get the code 12 again due to the sounds your describing,but the codes 54 & 61 could disappear cos they can just be intermittent faults.

So for code erasure,do the following

1. Connect the short to the blue plug like u did in the test above.
2. Hold the brake pedal down while u turn the key on to ignition "ON"(do not start engine)
3. The ABS light will come on,after it goes off again,release the brake pedal.
4. When ABS light comes on again,press the brake pedal
5. When ABS light goes off again,release brake pedal
6. The ABS light will then blink twice telling u that the codes have been erased.

After u have erased the codes,go for a drive for about half an hour or so,try giving the ABS a workout as well a coupla times,& when u get back home,do another code check to see what codes come up now.Then report back here what u get.

For the code 12,take your right front wheel off & look just inside of the hub & on the end of the drive shaft u will see the ABS ring as shown below by the red arrow.

Check the serated ring all around to see there are no chips in the teeth,or shit stuck in between them.

Then u will see the sensor(with the wires hanging out of it) attached close to the serrated ring.Make sure the sensor is not loose or broken & that there is like a 0.5-1mm gap between the sensor & the serrated ring teeth.

For the other 2 codes,if they repeat again,we'll guide u through checking them out.
