Quoted from that thread: though since the australian RTA rules stats that putting an engine that is old than the chassis is illegal. (ie puting a 92 model B16a into a 94 model GLi is illegal)

i believe there is a loophole however if you get it tested for emissions, and the emissions meet or excel the requirements for your cars year.
best to check with an engineer however
hmm ok... so lets say i grab a vtec engine. wateva it is b or h and its a year lower then my car model... that means i can still put the engine in my car??
yes or no really confused about this one!
its illegal for the engine to be older then chasis in nsw to.
but iv heard of some people being able to do it and get it registered, so yes, i guess there is a way.
hmmm i want to know also how they did it.. would not mind knowing...
but i also dont want to get in trouble... blahzz :( no fair
its gotta be possible.
a bloke put a rb26 from a gtr into a vu holden ute.
teh ute is like, 4 years old, the engine is at least 10.
go figure
AFAIK engines need to be passed for EPA regulations equal to or newer than the chassis they are in.
That is , emissions legislations etc change year by year
and so do engines to meet this criteria.
I suppose if you can fit newer sensors to an older engine then why wouldnt it fit in a newer chassis ?
Ask a few actual engineers or the RTA / vicroads for the final say on this
