20% tint - any issues?

I'm thinking about getting 20% tint seeing as KRudd wants us to spend the money.

My only worries is that the cops would pull you over at night because it'll seem really dark (then again, i've seen heaps of cars with 20%). And also that if you write of your car, that insurance wont pay out.

Please post side view pics of your car if you have tints from 20% - 35%

This is mine currently with 35% (i think) on an overcast day. On a bright sunny day, the tint seems very light.

Your tints arent 35%. They are at least 25%.

I have 35% and im able to see the background clearer through the windows.

If you dont want to be seen or anyone to look inside your car then get 15%. Its what most people have.

They do seem darkish for 35% but it's very hard to tell from just one picture, as there are so many variables. I had 20% on my explorer and it was great, unless it was very bright. I'd suggest 20 with 5 on the back, or if you can get it, 15 all around.

Nah, trust me. its 35% or lighter. Thats why i said overcast. On a sunny day, it looks like i have no tint almost. Anyone with pics?

Yeah below 35% is illegal for a car, but no one really gets done for tints unless cops pick on you.

I like 25. I wish I could get that....but 20 is the only one after 35 that teh shop has....and i think their '20' is actually 18.

my car is nighthawk black can see perfectly fine inside the car even at night time..

if you go any lower %.. would be too hard to see..

35% is legal limit in NSW..

Oh man, thats perfect! I at first didn't want to go below 25% which was why I've put of tint for some time. You have one with a straight side on pic?

better to tint than none at all makes the biggest difference.
But i would go lower than 20% cause at night it might be harder to see also depending on how much lighting on the streets you drive.

hey xsite, post your car pics mate... i have 08 Euro with nighthawk black as well... want to see how 20% on it! Also, did you tint the wind screen? I plan to tint the rest 20% and wind screen 35%

You CANNOT tint the windscreen. That would just be unwise and far to dangerous. I don't think any tinter would even agree to do that. lol

No tinter will tint the front and if they do you should report them.
The only time a tinter would tint the front is if you add a strip on the top of the windscreen.

Might as well ask here. Anyone know where I can get a good price on 20%? Lowest I've got is 295 + peeling. Apparently there is one in northside for 200. but i really cbb driving there and back.

Go 5%. its dark and at night it is tricky to see out of but you can still clearly see other headlights etc.. i have had 5% on every car i have ever owned and one of my cars was ridden off by my mate driving it. he was at fault and when it came time for insurance to pay out there wasn't even a mention of it. i have never had troubles with regos or police..

This car i used to always get pulled up in because of the airbags and they never said one thing about the 5% tint ever. mind you i have never been defected in any car ive had..

20% is the go, my mate has it on his euro, cant see in even in daylight but still enough to see out when driving. Though its hard to tell if its a cop behind you or a taxi lol watch out.

also with the front, afaik front tinting is only allowd 50mm down from the top, it's illigal to tint anymore

I know a few friends that tint their windscreen (with the brightest tinted) and got pulled for RBT etc and never got asked about the windscreen...

dwn_boi, Yes it is off the ground... Normally referred to as dog legging but in other words it 3 wheels..

Tinting the windscreen is dangerous as the glue between the glass and the film may distort making it harder to see out and if the tint bubbles... well same thing really. Poor sight!

Cost me $200 by a guy i know to get my old tint removed and 5% layed in place..

5% on my old teg.. loved the fact that nobody could see in, even though it took a while to get used to how hard it was to see out. excuse the riced out racer look please. i don't know prices for the tint as it came with the tints when i bought it

the good thing about 20% is that you can barely see into the windows (at night), from the inside you have visibly of everything around you..

the front 2 seats you can see through it only because the front windscreen is clear by law...

lined up beside someone... they can barely see your face... only an object (yourself)

I would not recommend 5% darkness. Its ridiculously dark and on a rainy day its a bitch man and when it fogs up it makes things worse. Only Du is gangster enough.

15% lowest max.

If you looks at police high patrol or unmarked cars their tints are lower then 35% easily. It shouldnt be an issue with cops.

i had 5% for 2 years.. cops didnt touch me :)

if you get 5% at the rear or anything lower than 20% actually lol i'd reccomend some reverse sensors!!

I'd never recommend tinting the windscreen, try wearing some polarized sunglasses and you find out why.

Just because you haven't been caught yet doesn't mean you won't be, insurance companies are touch and go some are on the ball some aren't, though 5% looks like your looking at black plastic not glass, takes away the sexy silhouette.

as you can see... from a distance you have no visibility inside the car.

i rekn 20% would do you nicely, i think 15% is too dark for your car and might wreck the look of it. Personally anyway. I got 15% on mine and its pretty dark windows are pretty much black on most angles.

In the interests of clarification.......If you read the statutory requirements for the aftermarket fitting of window film throughout this country (with exception of SA where it must have 70% visible light transmission on the 2 front doors and 35 on the rear), then 35% is the legal requirement film all around.
Not, and I stress not 15, 20 or 25!

If you have that on, you potentially void any insurance claim you may have in the event of an accident and you'd better have an onus of responsibility document absolving you in favour of the film fitter who knowingly installed it illegally for you.

The legal fraternity survives on stupity and cupity and takes no prisoners.
Heaven forbid if anyone is even injured as a result of your darker than 35% film application.
It's a predicament you would not ever want to be in.

I still think 20% is not dangerous. You can see out of it PERFECTLY. I would say a good 20% is still much safer than a crapply applied 35%. I agree that anything lower unsafe no matter how good you think you are. But 20% really does not impair any visibility.

For those that don't understand the industry coding numbers.

The visible light transmission is a film specification that denotes the amount of light that we see that passes through a given film.
If you have a 20% film, it actually means you are losing 80% of the normal light that should be passing through clear automotive glass.....effectively the same as wearing sunglasses at night whilst driving.

Should another motorist pull up beside you and is intent on looking through your car's windows, then his vision is not only compromised by a 20% or less light transmission film, but then take away 80% of what's left as he is looking through a double layer and the rest is self explanatory as to why it's illegal for all and sundry.

University tests do in fact confirm that these films are deemed dangerous and irresponsible for automotive applications and why I don't nor ever had installed these types of films.

I've got 15% on my car, wish it was abit darker than again at night is pretty good. Got tint removed and put on for $250. Johnson Film :)

Tinter, I know exactly what you are saying.....but it wont change the fact that many people probably even me will put 20% tint on their car. If you ask most people here with 20%, they will say thats its not that dark and easily viewable through at night.

That's been the problem with this industry for years....there is no accountability but that's not of your doing.
It's the film wholesalers and their useless inept Window Film Association of Australasia who only look at the colour of the money on the table and would sell their soul to the devil for a quick buck.

35%'s the legal limit. Anything lower and you can get 'done'. With that said, most pple seem to have 20%'s. Apparently (per Tint Mart) the 20% and 35%'s aren't really viewably different, as it's more determined more by general lighting conditions (as everyone realizes :) )

Keeping in mind, the tint % might void your insurance..

Thats exactly why i created this thread to see if anyone had issues with insurance. Touch wood, if anything does happen, i'll just peel off the tint before claim.

There are a few issues with window tint.

The legal tint level is 30% so I've been told (common misconception is it's 35%). Now, if the tint comes from the factory this 30% applies only to the front passenger and driver windows. However, you will notice some of the newer cars have darker back windows than front windows. And this is legal. These are 'privacy windows' - and yes I believe they are darker than the legal 30%. BUT, the difference is it's not actually a tint - it is an 'ink' in the glass from the manufacturer. Hence making it legal.

I have just had the tint done on my Civic - Midnight Express 30% front and Midnight Express 15% rear. So far I have had no problems and it looks great but I probably wouldn't suggest any darker than 15%. And if the cops are around, just wind the windows down. Easy. As long as it's not raining lol. The darker tints (ie 15%) are a little more 'metallic' looking, but the privacy is so much better, plus looks great on a white car. Only thing is because it didn't come from the factory like this I didn't get a receipt.

It is actually 35%.
There are no films made for auto that come specifically with a 30% VLT regardless of film manufacturer.

The reason privacy glass is allowed to be imported on certain models of cars is that these cars come into the country under Australian Design Rules (ADR's) which are different to local state laws which allow retro fitting.
The federal authorities don't permit anything on the front doors except the normal 70% super light tint that just about all cars these days have.

It is not an ink at all but coloured tinted glass.

The only reason 15% films would appear metallic is because they would have a metal aluminium or titanium deposition included into the base polyester substrate.
15% films are also made without shiny finishes and therefore are non reflective and produce more of a better enhancement visually.

You didn't get a receipt for one of 2 reasons.......
1. The guy was cheating on the tax man and doesn't want to declare his black money and is using the illegal status as a BS ploy.
It has nothing to do with not coming from the factory like this!

2.He doesn't leave a paper trail behind in the event of an investigation into fitting an illegal film in the event of something catastrophic happening.


Hope this helps clarify some of the enormous misconceptions about window film that exists on many forums here in Australia and world over.

Fader films are illegal for general everyday automotive use and I can't understand why they are advertised.
But then again, the lack of film application responsibilty shouldn't surprise me these days even from professional installers.

These films are ideal for show cars and that's about it that never hit the road.

A blue film is available from Suntek and it has a very nice light 50% VLT and provides a look similar to that found on stock VW Golf R32's and some newer upmarket Mercedes Benzs.

I have 15% on my Euro with 65% on front windscreen - looks awesome, keeps the heat out extremely well and has never attracted the attention of the police (had this setup on my last 2 cars also). You just need to keep in mind that it is illegal and if you do get a jerk of a cop on a 'mission', he will happily slap a work order on it... The risk you have to take i guess - but from my experience, if you dont drive like a knob and get their attention, they will happily let your black windows cruise on...

Does the blue tint do much in regards to sun protection?
