that 6 months is a suspended sentence, so only comes in if they do something wrong again....

I read on performance forums something about being able to use fuel as ballast being against the rules as well? which reads to me that any fuel in the system which makes the car up to 600kg is able to be used as ballast...= bad.

plus, someone else suggested if BAR claim that the extra tank (which i understand is a pressurised tank to allow them to run 50psi in the fuel system) does not need to be drained then why not have a 50kg pressurised tank and no other fuel tank, then you could have a car weighing 550kg! so i can see where the FIA is coming from.

Having said that, the rules didn't specifically exclude it, just a case of BAR pushing the envelope and getting caught, bad luck, shut up, go do some testing, and win some races when you come back.

My favourite line from that quote is "the integrity of the body" - Good one Max!!!

I think this has all been blown out of proportion. As Hondavirgin said, BAR were pushing the envelope and they got caught. The precedent is now set and all teams now know exactly what the ruling is....

This reminds of the early Schumacher and then Schumey/Ferrari days. It seemed like almost every race he (or the team) was being acused of cheating (both with Benetton and Ferrari). He has always been pushing the limits both on and off the track. Some times he got pulled up and banned for races....that's what happens. You push the boundaries, the sport evolves, things get cleared up for everyone. That is part of the reason why he has always been at the top - he was never afraid to push.

I can see why BAR is upset, but they should have copped it sweet. Fighting with Max once the decision has been made is just fighting a losing battle, and now look what has happened. BAR are going to have to be on their best behaviour for the rest of the season now.

Its all about the meaning of the word "ballast", ie is the fuel in that smaller surge tank ballast? To BAR, it wasnt, they believe it was necessary to the cars running, ie like oil, like tyres etc, necessary, and therefore not a ballast. To the FIA, it is a ballast, and must be drained as part of the fuel system.

This meaning is the problem of the whole issue, and it is the reason why the courts could not say they were deliberately cheating, their criticism was that they didnt ask the FIA to get a ruling on it.

So in light of this, BAR basically are arguing, since it is an error made in interpretation of the rules, the 2 race ban is severe and disproportionate. IE like when Williams ran brake ducts that were deemed to be illegal, or traction control back in the day, ie they are infringements as to the meaning, therefore if they only lose points for that day, why does BAR suffer a 2 race ban.
