Iv just completed a semester on fluid dynamics as part of my mechanical engineering course, so can correctly give you your answer.
It defiantly will flow more air through the radiator core, your above theory is quite far off.
I cant be bother explaining to far into it, so I drew a pic.
The red spray is high pressure area, green spray is low pressure area. The arrows show the direction of air travel. In the 1st and last pic, the air has nowhere to go but through the radiator this big restriction means air is high pressure. Since less air is flowing into the bay, behind the radiator will be of a lower pressure. Greater differences between the 2 pressures means more air flow.
In the 3rd photo, there is a big hole where plenty of the air in front of the radiator can easily escape there will be a greatly reduced high pressure zone in front of the core. Since tons of air is flowing into the bay, it will be of a higher pressure, ie. Less air flow.

Imagine an air blower blowing air down a tube at your radiator (bottom pics) a lot more airs gunna go through the radiator that is sealed up, not just having the air blown at it.
Believe me it will, air flows the path of least resistance. If you have a half size radiator, with nothing next to it, a lot of the air directed toward the core just goes around it. Putting a simple block off plate will raise the air pressure on the front side of the radiator and lower the air pressure behind it, causing more flow through the core. Every bit of resistance for the air going around the core will increase the air through the core.
Not true, ive seen plenty of turbo honda projects where the stock cooling system needed upgrading. If you look at the stock EK1 radiator, its slightly bigger than an A4 sheet of paper and about 1cm thick. Getting more air through the core would be the best way to increase the cooling capacity without going to a larger system. remember, more power = more heat energy = more cooling needed.
You cant ram the core with air if it can easily go around it instead.
Think of it this way, say you had an air duct at the front of your car in a high pressure zone to feed the engines air box with. Having big gaps around the radiator would be like drilling big holes in your high pressure intake tube. The air is no longer forced into the box, you’ve lost the pressure, it can escape into a low pressue zone instead of being forced to the engine.
You could go out and buy an aftermarket radiator, but all it takes is some thin sheet aluminium ($10) and a little thinking (hardly over engineering), and you could easily fab up something that looks nice and adds quite a lot of resistance to the air trying to escape around the radiator through the hole left from the condenser. It would be easy to increase the flow through the stock radiator by 10-70% depending on how far you went to block off any areas.
Hey mate its all coming along now, looks sweet. Im chasing a D16 if your interested in selling the old one send me a pm. cheers josh
pm sent
muzz: I "over engineered" myself a blocking plate a few weeks back with sheet alluminium and tin snips. Only took 1.5 hours and didn't require much thought.
can the bs please stop being posted in my thread. seriously has nothing to do with MY car at all. and for all who wants to no its being tuned at the end of the week, more pics should be available tonight of the finished exhuast and car back on all fours
It is about YOUR car cause we're talkin about YOUR airflow through the front of YOUR car with YOUR turbo setup and YOUR current air/heat management configuration.
I hope YOU appreciate the time that muzz went to to type that info cause he knows alot more then YOU.
my 2 cents.
no its not as i said im not looking into it that much atm, if i am having issues i will look at it when it arrouses, as i said before i want the car going that is my aim atm not wasting my time doing airflow shits when its not needed, yes it could be imporved but NO I AM NOT LOOKING IT INTO AT THIS TIME AS I STATED THE FIRST TIME YOU BROUGHT IT UP.
and your not even specifying my car any more you are just general talking about it, like i said go make ur own thread for it, its good tech, but its not about MY CAR's topic.
Mod Pm'd :)
ooooooo he dobbed on us. lol
Any more pics of your car? Any closer pics of the engine bay?
like i said should have new pics tonight with the car sitting back on its wheels and the whole exhuast made. well thats the aim for tonight anyway, see how we go, then the only thing left is water cooling lines for the turbo and then she will be sitting waiting for dave to come up
Hey Aza, i tied to send a pm but your inbox is full. Ill try again tomorrow. cheers
nice work az cant wait to see her running! and good work to the people on this thred who go to efford to post up good posts with insightfull info!
