oil light only comes on when no oil left !!! too late !
Yes, the oil light turns on when the oil pressure is low. By then, it would have been too late. Checking your oil level regularly is the safe way to be sure.

The engine light on the other hand covers both emissions problems and engine sensor problem. At least when the engine light is on, a part is usually dead and needs to be replaced. If the oil light is on, be prepared to do some engine work to fix it up. :(

Lack of oil means low oil pressure (basically no oil being pumped to the moving parts of the engine). The oil's purpose is to lubricate the engine. That grinding sound you heard was the metal rubbing against metal which causes wear and damage.Quote:
