The minute I've cleared up some funds after getting the Euro, I'll be getting the Garmin Streetpilot 2610 from www.ja-gps.com.au. They're about $1.5k at the moment, but from my understanding offer some of the best features and functionality. One of the my favourites must be the remote control so as a passenger I can play around whilst my partner is driving.
The only thing I'm worried about is the mess of cables from the ciggy lighter power outlet. I've already got a Roadangel V1, so it would be really cool to get a custom dual powerplug configured in the dash itself.
Its the amount Telstra or shall we say Sensis want for the mapping. Alpine approached them for it and they said that it will be approx. $1,000,000 for the mapping. Alpine told them to stick their maps where the sun don't shine :DQuote:

VDO & Blaupunkt & Becker (not 100% sure on Becker) on the other hand forked out the dollars as they knew that the return on new versions of mapping discs will slowly make their money back. And as most of you know that have nav's in your cars that a new nav map disc isnt cheap at $350-$400. These days you can't copy them as they have special coding which you have to purchase from the manufacturer to operate the disc.
Nav is a bitch, and if people really dont know where your going, maybe they shouldnt be driving :D
I'm sorry to bring this thread back alive - not even sure it should be here, but does anyone know which brand for in-car GPS is better? Garmin or Navman? I'm a total noob at GPS and want to get one ASAP.
I've figured out that those are the two main brands in AUS - is that due to a support issue?
I guess i'm considering the Navman ICS510 or 635 and the Garmin C320.
or the other option is if ur not so lazy and have half a brain get a melways....and at only $30 its alot cheaper then the navman and u can take it with you where ever u go lol
yeah but sat nav is such a cool gadget! You can hardly call a street directory a gadget can you?
I drive alot.. and time is precious money. I can visit 15-20 places a day. Looking at the melway whilst driving is not the safest way of doing things. Its not a luxury item. Its a working tool for me.
Could someone recommend a good bluetooth GPS unit to operate with my PDA? How much do they cost? $100-200?
I just recently got the navman 510 and I gotta say its brillient.
I live in sydney and am always going to places I haven't been too yet.
Yes I have a street directory book however looking at that while driving will get me killed or worse into a fender bender with my nice euro.
The 510 in my opinion is the best bang for your money, its quick, lots of features you want, very accurate (which comes down to the GPS satelite power) and quite fast.
It has always gotten me where I want to go and its very easy to use.
The speaker is top notch too, can hear it even doing 110 down a highway with the window open (I had to test it hahaha)
I currantly have it on the drivers side near the piller down low and just run the cord from the ciggie lighter to the navman.
i can highly recomend it!!!
Garmin have just released a new product called the Street Pilot C320 which is an all-in one unit with a touch screen that fits nicely in the pocket below the HU in the Euro. Plugs into the cigarette lighter but you could also hard wire it if you are handy enough.
At around $950 its probably your best bet, aside from going the laptop in the boot with a simple touch screen up front controlling it...this would give you DVD, MP3 and the rest...that is the way to go!
The C320 looks cool but misses out on some not entirely essential but otherwise quite nifty navigational features that I personally would like to play with when my partner is driving. Plus also the contrast is not as good as the 2610 in direct sunlight. For simply getting to a different address it should be great though - currently on a $946 special here .
I wouldn't mind using Melways so much if only these darned roads could be properly marked! Argh, speaking as a European, street labeling in this country is just ridiculously bad. The only way to find cross streets is to somehow, through the jungly of advertising signs, spot a tiny miniscule road sign - which in most of my cases - if I'm actually lucky enough to spot it, if it is even there - tend to be just as I'm passing the thing, so small is it, necessitating a u turn and then to travel back.
Also for just going on drives I reckon having a nav system would be a great thing; you could just go on whatever roads you feel like, and then when the time comes look up the nav and find where to go next - e.g., are there any restaurants nearby? That feature is über-cool in my opinion.
Sorry could you list the features its missing out on. My concern is that its slighlty bulkier, and it does not do waypoints (ie a list of places in one route). Either that or the sales person knew very little.
