someone try weighing in a set of rims - ANY set of rims first flat ( no compressed air inside) then again , fully inflated. I cannot say the exact increase of mass due to tryre dimensions etc...but it does add a significant amount. Obviosuly, larger profile tyres will hold more compressed air than lower profiles of the same with/diameter etc.
You have to measure the whole wheel with the tire+air.......otherwise it's no point!
Just weighed mine again.. My 17's + tire + 44psi air = 18.4kgs.. There's not much difference really :)...

I just checked the weight and it's actually 13Kgs. Not sure where I got 8 from! That's 205/50/15 on 3.8Kgs rims at around 35psi.Quote:

You can get custom made steelies cheap - wider etc. I saw 16" steelies on a Falcon the other day, so i'd say you could even get wide 16" steelies to fit a Honda; probably lighter than other JDM rims... And since its all about performance these days, why not?

so the conclution is...
steelies are lighter than aftermarket wheels, but performance wise may lose on grip and handling depending on wideness and tyre threads.
aftermarket wheels..having almost the lightest 15in (3.8kg) + the tyres will get around 13kgs. and the bigger the wheels the more heavier they will weight all in total.
at the end..weight wise.. stock steelies will b 1kg lighter than aftermarket wheels (considering 15in here) so its 4 kgs in a set of 4.
and if u hav 17in like VTC- 8OY ..tat will b ~6kg more in one wheel. hence ~24kgs in total for a set of 4.
and v t e c mentioned..does a few kgs make a difference?? i would like to know too. :) would an increase in weight like 4kgs in total make a big difference? how about an increase in weight at 24kgs in total? wat would it feel like?

Isn't the whole point of alloy wheels that they're lighter than steel wheels? Alloys are a softer metal, so they scratch and dent more easily. Alloys are light, steelies are strong. I'd be really surprised if you got two wheels of the same size and the steel wheels were lighter.

I reckon with steelies regardless of profile ill be faster down the str8 as they are light as...
dont compare steelies to 2-3k wheels.. compare them to the avrage mag for the average joe and they become a massive avantage..

If I got aftermarket rims, they would only be 16's...
Big rims can make the ride pretty craptacular, lightweight rims are good, but you don't really notice the difference in weight :(
