currently i have a simota one and a k&n one i like both of them both very good should consider them they are reasonably priced too especially the simota one it works a charm dont be fooled by brands

I use Apex'i power intake and it's great.
Apparently not the best in power gains but it cleans the best.
HKS mushroom and mesh type apparently don't clean the air well at all.
i've used the blitz pods on both my honda and Ford, they are very loud and are low maintenance and after about 6mths of use i still found the inside of the intake pipes clean as. As for performance gains nothing dramatic just the throttel is a bit more responsisve.

yes that is the apexi power intake, i got its for $280 including tube and installation from www.shiftpeformance.com.au
the chance of getting defect is rare, can u tell us more info on where this occur and how? ie. did u rev ur engine?.. I guess the best alternative is getting the K&N stock air filter or the mugen one, unless you have some way of covering ur pod with a stock air box.. preferrable black. dont know what they will say about the stainless steel intake tube.. thats legal right?
funny thing is i know many people with pod filters. they always let you off for the first time anyways, so thats a good thing.
No I wasnt revving or anything, the pod was noisy even at low revs. It occured after the Cahill express way before entering Kings Cross (where those naval ships are). The front left light was out, but they didnt really take notice until they heard the hissing noise.
But anyway, the K&N stock replacement is just as good IMO.

the SIMOTA filters are PAPER element !! they are designed to LOOK like K&N cotton filters but they are disposable PAPER items.. thus the $20-40 pricetag !! and yeah you can put ANYTHING you like on a website and people will believe it.. like someone on here's old signature --> the internet - the most reliable source of unreliable information.
K&N Hands down, especially cause when you get board of it you can burn out the cotton with a BlowTorch for fun!
