cheers for the info
i did fair bit of reading on s2ki-got confused with some different views on different gears- some says 4.77 is too much and not suitable for street driving, some says even the 4.56 is too much and some even says that it doesnt improve acceleration due to more shiftings and some says its like having SC,etc so I thought Id directly ask someone who owns one

So far, out of all the forums, im the only one in Aus with a 4.77 FD. In regards to shifting, its nowhere near as bad as some make it out to be. There is an extra shift to get to 100km, but unless u bought ure car to time how fast u can get to 100km its not a problem. Time to 130km and see what happens. U may read some ppl say that a car with gears may be slower than a stock car in some speeds increments. Although this is technically true, it certainly works both ways with the geared car having the advantage at certain points.
To give u an idea. Lets say a stock S and a geared S both start at point A at 0km. They then see who can make it first to point B. (point B being the top speed of the geared car approx 240km.) The geared car will reach point B first by about 4 car lengths on average. Obvious disadvantage is that if the comparison continues past point B, the stock can will eventually pass the geared car as it has more top speed. So its faster in some points, slower in others. Its up to the driver to decide where they'd like to be faster.
Cornering and track work also can come into it. Every corner is different. They can be taken at various speeds and come in different lengths. In a geared car, the speed and length of a particular corner may not suit, meaning an extra shift must be made or that ure taking the corner out of the cars power band b/c of the shorter gears. Although this can work the other way also. U may find a corner where it suits the geared car perfectly, being in the powerband the whole way through. In this instance stock gearing may have the disadvantage, considering the cornering speed, the gear before may have already reved out, and the current gear is only letting u crawl through at 5k rpm or so. Again depending on the corner u may find ureself in this situation in either stock or the geared car,the thing is the geared car will have the advantage on the straight. (unless speeds exceed 240km)
For the street they are PERFECT. I could never go back to 4.10. Its got so much more drivability now. Alot of ppl say u have to shift alot. Ive found due to the new gearing, i can sail in and out of traffic in 4th gear now quiet easily. Before id have to shift between 3rd and 4th to get anywhere. Same senario on the freeway. I can accelerate easily in 6th before id have to drop a gear. So it all depends on the situation. My S is a daily driver. I do alot of freeway and city drving. At 100km in sit just under 4K rpm, it doesnt phase me at all. If u had a lound single exhaust, it may get annoying.
End of the day,im now faster than cars i usually wasnt. Ive been for drives with stock S2000's and they've all come back wanting gears. It really is the best NA mod u can do to ure car. I love my 4.77's
Heres a calculator that will help with gear speeds

Heres a vid of a stock S vs 4.57 (Yes he does back off just before the end) Pay attention to the individual cars behaviour at gear change increments.

Sorry to bring this post back from the dead but I also got my 4.77s done two weeks ago. Thanks to WhiteAP1 for the part numbers and advice. I'm based in Sydney, got it done at IS Motor racing. Just in case anyone is interested, paid $520 for kia final drive plus some honda parts, $70 to cryotreat, $130 for yellow box, and $400 for install. All up, that's just over $1k. Only problem is, I haven't got the yellow box installed yet.
Anyone have any idea where I can get this done? I called Toda and they are quoting $150 for install which I think is pretty expensive
Anyone? :)

^^ thats a pretty good price.
how do you like it so far?
-
what is yellowbox??
Spidey: did u get the gears cryotreated at ISMR ?
-
Fly- I love them. The car is more zippy and I find it very fun to drive. I'm very pleased with this mod and I'm glad I chose the gears that I did. There is a noticeable difference, however, it's not as much a deal as some people make it out to be with 4.77s (saying it's too much). It feels great as a daily driver /street car. On highways the revs do get rather high though so like I learned before I switched, if you drive on highways alot, drive it in fifth gear and that'll give you an idea of the revs you'll be at. But all in all, WhiteAP1 was right, once you get them you can't go back LOL.
ChromZ - no, I got it cryotreated at another place called MT & C Engineers. Found them on google, and spoke to Stephen Hooker who was a real good help. I mean, he does pick ups and what not so he actually came to pick up the ring and pinion from me at work, got it done in 5 days, and delivered them back to me all for $70 bucks. Couldn't be happier. Oh and a 'yellow box' is a speedo recalibrator. Because the ratios are changing when you get your gears done the speedo will be reading incorrectly as it's still calibrated to read the ratio of the OEM gears which is at 4.10, hence the need to recalibrate.
Speaking of which, ANYONE know where I can get this done?

Hey guys,
Got the Yellow Box installed so as an FYI for Sydneysiders, got it done at Toda in Wetherill Park for $150 bucks. They installed the yellow box and recalibrated it using the dyno. Also, I got a quote for just the recalibration if you know how to install the yellow box yourself, they'll charge $50 for the recalibration on it's own providing install is done correctly.
Hope that helps anyone as this was a question I had myself prior to getting this done.
Cheers.

that video shows a huge difference. does anybody know why honda chose not to put 4.77 gear set in from factory?
-
just got my car back today with 4.77 gears and man i will never go back to 4.10 gears lol
thanks for the help spidey! :)

Hey Sho,
No worries, when you FINALLY wear them in you'll have a blast hitting redline.
BTW, to answer your question, I didn't even know there was an s2k meet on Sunday.
-
how long did you give it before u started to redline it?
