Dont forget the orig spec S-02 OE to the AP1 S2000 were bespoke tyres ie they might look the same as other S-02s in terms of tread pattern but the construction is changed to tailor to the car. Just like the OE tyres from major performance tyres manufacturers with tyres specific for Porsches with their N suffix ie N0, N1, N2 etc.
For a car with potentially very twitchy handling, it paids to have tyres that are forgiving with good feedback.
I remember there were few articles being written both in print and on the web where S2000 owners put on a set of generic S02 due to cheaper price , greater avail and out of ignorance of the tyre shop; and find the handling gone evil and some even crashed.
Always wondered back then ie early 2000s what happens when they finally discontinued the S02....May be they still make the AP1 S02 for this model? Someone at Bridgestone Australia headquarters ought to know.

S02's are discontinued. Any stock a tyre shop may be getting are probably off, from sitting in storage.
I went with a set of 4 RE001's today. The S02s are a great tyre, but ud think in 9 years since its release they'd be huge improvements in tyre construction to make the difference/s from bespoke S02s to something like RE001s less noticeable.
I know my wallet felt better after only paying $714 for all four tyres. S02s where $300 or so for the rears each.
