you can get a '00-01 VTR250 for about $4k

or if you're a small guy you can pick up a near new ('07-08) CBR125R for about that.

otherwise you might be better off looking at a suzuki, i dont think there are any good yamaha road bikes in your price range.

also, get some insurance quotes on a CBR250RR... you might not like very much.

thanks for the info. Im also looking for kawasaki ninjas but there arnt many for sale. I was reading that they are also a great learners bike. Easier to ride than a CBR250RR

FLY, there are plenty of other good learner bikes around. Don't limit yourself to ancient road-racer replicas (think evo kitted lancers). Read the learner bike thread for some good suggestions and shop from there.

IMO, you really should look elsewhere than the 250rr, ninja 250 etc.

overpriced, old (the ones you can afford), and for a learner you just dont need it. if you dont lose interest in bikes, you do the natural thing and upgrade to a bigger bike once you're off restrictions.

PS: some bikes over 250cc are approved for L/P riders. check out the RVF400 (also honda)

theres an 05 r1 at pickles this week i've got my eye on

i hate how they do auctions on weekdays and you gotta pay massive deposits (portion of which is non refundable) to bid over the phone or online

someone pick that bike up! bargain at anything less than 11k

FLY, For a beginners bike I would recommend the CBR250RR, even though its expensive for its age, it literally shits over any other learner bikes out there. I'm referring to combination of handling, engine/power, brakes, and reliability. I've owned a FZR250, CBR250RR, and Ninja 250 *not current shape*, and to be honest its worth spending the extra 1-2K for the better bike.

On the same note parts are easily and readily availabe for you at your Honda Motorcycle dealer. You can seriously walk into the parts department and say you want this this and this, and they can have it for you in no time. Parts usually come from Melbourne, else its sourced from Honda Japan. You can even buy original fairings that comes painted and with original stickers. Also there are local bike stores in Liverpool, Campbelltown, Silverwater that stock parts for the CBR250R/RR. And especially for a learner bike you will find this heaps useful in the near future. Try sourcing parts for a Kawasaki Ninja250- not easy.

My girlfriend has recently gone for her learners licence and I was also looking for a CBR250RR but we couldn't find one in our budget so we opted for the single R. TBH, its almost an identical bike barr the brakes, minor engine difference, and a fuel pump. **We managed to find one with RR carbies though :D

To sum it up, I would say no to GPXs, ZZR250s, CBR125R(unless you want the most reliable postie bike out), FZRs, etc. If you're budget is lower than 5.5K, then RVF is outta the question also.

Only downside to the 250RR: Boy racer look *thumbs down* -

Agreed somewhat re: parts (though I had no trouble finding parts for my 3LN3 FZR at all - which you'd know is the rarer single headlight model) but I'm not sure why you rule out GPX's, ZZR's, and every other decent learner bike around?

hmm interesting, i was looking at a couple of zz2r's which seemes to be pretty good, your right, i ( and i assume fly too), will be looking to upgrade once the restricitons off, but i dont wanna be stuck there cursing everyime i go for a ride and cant enjoy myself, plus a 250 or 400 would prob be better when your talking about upgrading so soon, less of a jump.
guess im trying to say its like jumping into a gtr from a gtst, compared to a jump from a gts(wont say civic lol).

ive seen them from 2500 needing fixup and rego, to about 6000, at least it wont depreciate!

Yeap, cbr would be easier to resell. Also wont lose too much money on it at all.
