really good idea....for those engines with the room to do this.
B's and D's are alitte tight around the filter area !

you can also puy a tray underneath it?
lol.
lol
I've done it with an old NB MX5 as well. You don't need space (space on the MX5 was just enough to put one hand in as deep as my wrist. Everything else was skillful wriggling fingerwork :). As long as you can get the bag around the filter, you're set. Once the filter is out, just make sure you keep your finger on the bag so you make a seal at the area beneath the filter mount.
Yeh, even with a tray under my filter, oil still goes everywhere, its not a clear path between the filter and the ground for my d16y4, theres shit in the way which cops the oil.
Nothing a rag and quick spray of degreeser wont fix though.
so mobil synth S semi synth will be fine for a D16Y4 ?
i just got the car so not sure what its been running so im thinking of going semi synth then fully synthetic after a few changes does that sound ok ?
and can i use cheap ryco filters
so guys im about to do mine and im changing the filter with it
was wondering what type of filter tool is best to use i tryed using one of the basic tools and it keeps slipping thru / not going tight enough to go around the tiny ass filter
I'm usually able to get mine off by hand, they're not supposed to be too tight.
sigh i did try hand no luck
i find that the tool with the canvas belt works best (as opposed to the all steel one), but if you can buy the Honda tool it may be better... when you change the filter, do it as tight as you can BY HAND, ensure you get some oil on the seal to help get it off next time, and check for leaks after you replace it.
I've got one of those oil filter removal tools that attaches to a socket wrench but it's a bit of a nuisance to use.

It looks a bit like that. More recently I've just used a jar opening cloth and found that much much easier, looks like one of these:

It's just a rubber cloth you use to unscrew jar lids but it's excellent for unscrewing oil filters too!
That's excellent Munted, never knew such a thing existed. Can't wait to get a Mighty Gripper!
ya sand paper trick works alrite ive heard
ok i bought a canvas belt tool today and tryed it but dont got a 1/2 inch breaker bar / wrench but i bought castrol edge 5-30 will that be alrite fully synthetic it says
just some words of advice....
with taking off a oil filter , its best to "CRACK" it from below with a proper oil filter tool. IE 3/4 prog grip or grip chain etc. anything else you risk slipping + scalding from oil or exhaust pipe lol.
Once the filter is slightly loose , jump up , place a drip tray underneath and process to access the oil filter from the TOP of the engine bay. Undo by hand , tip over and drain all excess oil from filter tool.
and either drop into the bay or slowly pull up. and dispose of
this saves the gush of oil on your arm/hand/face.
I'm feeling proud, changed the oil myself today. LOL
just did oil change + plugs , next up power steering fluid + coolant and gear box sigh
so was wondering the current sump plug is stripped , would anyone know roughly how much a new one would be ?
anyone here done an oil flush? like run through some new no frills/cheap oil and then idle for a min or two then empty and fill with clean feo?
does it make a difference? thinking of doing one on my next service.
As long as you have been servicing regularly (10000km/6 months maximum), then you don't need to flush the engine with cheap oil. Regular oil changes sort of act as an oil flush. Any particles of substantial size left inside will be caught by the oil filter. If you still want to do it, make sure you buy cheap 5w-30, 10w-30, 5w-40 or 10w-40. Although, I find that FEO is the cheapest. So you'd end up using 2 bottles of FEO for each oil change, which is a waste. You're better off changing engine oil every 3 months instead.
if your gonna flush just once is good enough. SHould have to do it every time
for cheap oil flushing I use whatever is left over from prev oil changes and use it as a flushing oil. And if I don't have enough qty to do that or the leftover oil is too precious for that purpose I buy the Gulf Western 20w50 4L oil from supercheap auto for $9.95 and use that instead.
I only use flushing oil after a dose of solvent based flush additive eg Nulon engine flush to get rid of any left over flush additive trace as it's very aggressive and I won't want any hanging around the engine till the next oil drain. If the engine wasnt really dirty ie sludged up and could do with a bit of a clean I would use a good old fashion diesel oil such as Castrol RX super 15W40 and run that for say 2000-3000km or even till the next oil change at 5000km.
hey guys, i tried looking for the oil filter today, how far inside the bay is the oil filter? can it be accessed using just jack stands?
and how much of oil do i fill up for B18C2?
yes you can access it that way, it's right underneath your intake manifold.
with filter change in your engine it's 4L.
alright, will try it out tmrw. thanks :)
my uncle work for castrol for about 20years now.and told me engine flush(like 20bx nulon etc..) is a gimmic it dosent really do anything like clean engine deposits and blah blah so according to him regualar change oil is the one you need to do
I bought 10 OEM washers today...to last the next 3-4 years of oil change :)
from Blacktown Honda for $2.20 each!!!! That's a bit effing expensive!!!. I thought i'll get them free.
whats the point of the washer anyway? to stop small drips?
who knows lol, everyone recommended it...so meh XD
how do I know when I have poured enough oil?
check your manual to see approx how much u need
and check your dipstick throughout when pouring new oil in
nice guide easy to understand thanks beny
thanks for this....=)
There a crush washer. Once its crush once it should be thrown away and replaced with a new crush washer.
If i have a new FD1, is it better to stick to the OEM honda engine oil or use something else?
Today i got
Castrol edge 5w-30 5l - $55
Genuine Oil filter inc drain washer - $22
my first oil change :D
Nice. Keep an eye out at supercheap, when sales are on you can get 5W30 Edge sport for like $45, sometimes even $40.
does anyone know the torque settings for the sump plug bolt?
did my first at home oil change last night.
Royal Purple 5w-30 :-) VERY NICE!!!!!!
Use engine oil can be recycled. Contact your local council about collection points.
Info from Australian Government:
Used motor oil is hazardous. [It floats on water and] can kill fish, frogs and other animals that breathe from the water's surface.
[But] Used motor oil can be recycled.
Oil doesn't wear out; it just gets dirty. Used oil can be cleaned, re-refined and used again [for example] as an industrial burner fuel, or re-refined back into new lubricating and hydraulic oil.
