gearbox bearing, anyone had to do it?

I think Aaron is right, the #1 input bearing is usualy 1st to go as it's the furtherst from the oil.
FWIW, we charge $400 gearbox in & out (R&R)
Then B-series gearbox overhaul is an extra $250 + parts
The #1 input bearing is approx $30 from CBC or other bearing supplier.
You'll need to check the bearing at the rear of the input shaft also, as this may be gone too.
Re reverse,
Replacing the 1st ~2nd hub ring & sleeve should sort this out.
These are approx $385 from JDM Yard or JDM Concept etc

Use that as a guide to compare the cost of a replacement box, say DC2 ITR...
Bare in mind your existing box still has a value & can be sold off to recover some costs.

ok buetifal, dosent sound as bad as the main bearing, so to give my gearbox a good going over with new parts, around 800-900 ? what sort of time frame with they need the car? obveously depending on how busy they are.

Could you quickly check if the noise goes away if you press the clutch pedal in while your are driving? Also, while you are holding the clutch down and moving, just press the accelerator a little bit to get the rpm to 2000-3000 rpm. If the noise disappears under these 2 conditions, then it helps confirm that it is the input shaft bearing.

the noise disappears when clutch is in, revving with clutch in makes no noise. im pretty sure thats right, i didnt specifically try so ill try tomoro and confirm, but im pretty sure thats right

Then it points to input shaft bearing. Common problem on gearboxes of that age. Get it replaced and you'll be sweet. At the same time, replace the clutch release bearing, lube the clutch release fork pivot and inspect the clutch for wear.

inner gearbox bearing or outter bearing? i would try redline gearbox oil first to see would the noise disappear first, $170/3.8L, i source form internet that redline gearbox oil may reduce the noise and extend the gbox life time....

I don't like redline. A few people report that it feels smoother at first and then it gets very notchy. And redline does nothing for input shaft bearing noise.

how much extra would it cost to do

Cheap and easy. If you buy a new OEM clutch release bearing and bring it along, it will take 10 seconds to pull out the old one and slide the new one on.

350 to drop new box in, picking second hand box up for 300, bam thats what im doing!

ok i grabbed it tonight, is there anyway a mech can open them up and inspect the condition? or would that require special kits to put the box back together?
