i would have thought having it on all the time would be like having a vtec killer cam? - would just run chunky/bad

it needs to be at a certain rpm for the reason is that the oil pump isnt supplying enough pressure to the head and will result is loose of oil pressure. i wouldnt recommend running anything manual as there is a reason why honda designed it that way

I know this has been solved already but another way you can check the solenoid is the resistance in ohms, check with multimeter. if it's even one ohm out it can stop it engaging, which is what happened to me ages back.
