40,000km service and timing belt?

i had my 80k service not long ago which was $645, and they reccommended timing belt for like $450 supplied and fitted.. i was like ZOMG FCUK THAT.. but now everything is okay :p... we bought the car like 2 months ago.. and dad said to the car yard owner dude that he was pissed cos of the $$$ of the last service and the $$$ of the timing belt.. subaru's cost less, so have all of our other cars.. and cos we bought it in 2005 and it was a 97 and it should be changed every 5 yrs or 100k kms... so the car yard owner said next service was on him, sorry for incovenience... saves me some $$$ for uni lolz

Dude with other cars I would say yeah go for it.

But Honda has an interference head design. In other words if you don’t change it and it does snap your screwed (bent valves and all kinds of trouble). It’s going to be a 2-3k service bill rather than the 300-400 bucks.

Being cheep now will cost you in the long run.

I just looked up what 40,000km service is supposed to be. And I don’t think you got all that hard done by.

40,000 Service.
Replace
-oil
-oil filter
-air filter
-fuel filter
-spark plugs
-transmission fluid
-brake fluid
-clutch fluid
That’s a dam big service. Plus you did the cam belt.

But then again, why do a major service at Honda? I bet u can get a better deal at Midas or Ultra Tune.

Anyways, take the risk? Here are sum pictures of my sisters 98' 9-3 Saab, she just bought it about 6-8 weeks ago, while driving into the underground car park at work, ALL THE BELTS RIP OFF, FKING SHE DRIVES DOWN 2 LEVELS B4 PARKING THE DAME CAR!!
*gets phone call: "John call dad, theres sumthing wrong with the car! Smoke started comeing out from the bonnet and it was really hard to turn the car!"
"yeah ur timming belt is probably loose man, ill tell dad"

My dad and i rock up to my sisters work.... WTF!!!!!

The car was still under its 3month/5000Km warranty from the dealer, but yeah still sux. This happened last week btw.

Anyways, whats done is done, got another 5 years to worry about it. Funny thing is i kept the old belt and it looks newer than the the one they put it, barely a sign of wear on it, just smells like oil fumes.

I was really annoyed at how they informed me though, I said at the beginning I need a report on it and we'll go from there, I get a phone call and they tell me the mechanic says it nees to be done NOW, I thought fair enough, get in there and ask how they test the belts and the answer is "Oh, there is no test, its just goes by time or kms" grrr fair enough again as it is just over 5 years old, grrrr...

I'll be doing the services scheduled at 5 years (2000 civic) and I'm afraid of what the bill will be, lol.
But that's part of owning a vehicle. :D

wahh... if he dont have the money he cant do it. so he has to drive with it... hondas are good cars they should be able to handle a few more k's.... i bought my r32 from japan it had 120 000km on it and i didnt change the belt for another 1-2000 kms... it was fine...

BUT if you are gonna do the service do the oil and other crap yourself just get a mechanic to change the belts.. that'll save you heaps

I dont recomend gambling with the timming belt.

yeh man i wouldnt gamble with the belts i nearly had mine let go on me in my 88 crx it was half ripped my mates a mech he said holly F**k man a few more k's this belt would have torn in 2 n it would of cost me big $$$ it will f**k most of ur internals

but the other more serviceable bits do yaself (oil filter, air, plugs, fluids etc)

I just bought a 96 ek civic and it had 150 000km the timing belt wasnt changed... i didnt change it for another 2000km the car was fine.. belt was fine to...BTW the genuine honda timing belt for my ek1 only cost 60bucks... so any1 who pays more is getting ripped the F#$K off cost me about 200bucks to change it altogether

regarding what honda recommends/says in relation to 5 years or 100,000km (which ever comes first):

why does age of the car come into play? what if you only drive the car like once a week?

Say you drove the car 100km per week, thats only 26000km in the 5 year period, is it still required you change the belt?

Because the belt is made of rubber. What happens to rubber when it ages? It brakes down and decays, making the belt weak.

So even if the car had 7kms on it and you didn’t drive it for 10 years. You might start it up and the cam belt would break.
