agreed, that whistle sounds awfully like my CAI at certain RPM's

pretty sure the stock box and the whole arm intake on stock models muffle most of the vtec engagement so it's barely audible.

but on the other hand i've never actually driven a ITR - maybe they're slightly different?

check your oil level

The sound you hear is not a vtec sound. It is the sound of an engine with lumpy aggressive cams. Here is a vid of a 4AGE which doesn't have variable valve, but sounds like a Honda vtec engine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIuq8...eature=related

I thought that was iVTEC?

I was under the impression tht VTEC engages at a certain RPM and is dependent on oil pressure.

Isnt iVTEC was the one dependent on throttle position?

ie - regardless of how hard u put ur foot down, VTEC kicks in at 5800 in the DC2R where as if you put your foot flat in an ivtec at say 3500rpm, ivtec will change the cam profile early to aid in bottom end torque?

No, there are many flavours of iVTEC. The one that you are describing is used in the 1.8L Civic's R18A engine. The K series engines' iVTEC is the one that changes at a set RPM, just like the DC2R. The difference is that the K series iVTEC has intake cam variable timing through the cam sprocket, which the B series VTEC doesn't have.

Also, changing to highcam at low RPM decreases torque. It doesn't increase it.

As said many times, check your oil level as you shouldnt rely on the dash light! if your oil is low you will still get a vtecish noise but no power increase,and if your only new to vtec then you could think that its changing over. Oh and always make sure the car is warmed up properly otherwise it will do the same thing!

Thats true.

If the car isnt warmed up, it will Rev but there will be no VTEC. (no power or change in sound)

probly totoaly off.. but could be that your clutch is starting to give way, i had to replace mine in my civic not long ago and before i did thevtec would scream its nuts off but not reali go any faster.. chnaged the clutch n its quieter and goes harder now.

that might even play a factor in the equation. as for my car I know that my clutch isn't that great so it feels a little numb.
